Heading into the 2024 Grand National at Aintree, Meetingofthewaters is sitting pretty towards the top of the betting market and a strong performance at the Cheltenham Festival last month has given punters every excuse to keep a keen eye on this seven-year-old.

He would finish only five-and-three-quarter lengths behind Chianti Classico in the Ultima, and despite being a little keen, he ran and jumped well that day and the thought among those who know him seems to be that he’s been given a very good weight and maybe this is his last chance to really impress before the handicapper catches up to his speed.

With back-to-back wins over in Ireland to finish the calendar year in 2023, there has been every indication that he has everything it takes to be a contender at the top level. The only poor run so far this term was in the Leopardstown Handicap Chase when he unseated his rider, but even before then he was running towards the rear of the pack and not looking likely to make an impact. The course that day was yielding to soft and that could well be the reason for a poor showing.

JP McManus only purchased this horse just before the Cheltenham Festival, so you know that his new owner thinks there is real promise in this seven-year-old, and whether we see that fulfilled on Saturday we’ll have to wait and see but the owner/trainer combination is one that will no doubt attract plenty of money in the market.
