Meetingofthewaters Grand National Odds 2025: An enigma of a horse

Meetingofthewaters might be the hardest of the Willie Mullins entries from which to know exactly what to expect. Two years ago it looked like a star was close to being born but it has been a bit of a struggle ever since.
Still, this eight-year-old has his supporters and we review Meetingofthewaters’ Grand National Odds and his recent form here in his horse profile…

Winning a big-time Class I chase at Leopardstown between Christmas and New Year in 2023, it looked as though Meetingofthewaters had finally broken through. That was a big victory and one that saw him being backed well in the Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival in 2024. A third-place finish there wasn’t a terrible result either.
His connections decided to take a punt on the Grand National a month later and punters liked that decision, backing him into 11/1. Sadly he would only finish seventh, although each-way punters with Betfred would have got some place money as we paid out for the top seven - just like we are doing this year.
The fact he’s gone round the Grand National course at Aintree before is certainly a plus point. Recent form, though, less so.
He would go back to Leopardstown and try to defend his title in that chase race but would finish 14th. Next time out as the 2/1 favourite in the Race And Stay At Leopardstown Handicap Hurdle, Meetingofthewaters would end up in 13th place. It was a perplexing performance that had his team scratching their heads.
Another tune-up race was put into his diary, and once more it was poor, finishing eighth of 11 finishers in a Class I at the same track.
All looked lost, but then the handicapper took note of his recent performances and gave him plenty of weight relief. He’ll be one of the lightest horses in the Grand National at 10st 7lbs, which is almost a stone less than he carried in his last race. That might well be the reason he’s been priced very much as a contender and someone who should be in and around the places.
I’m dubious, but that weight relief is certainly noteworthy.
