Thursday 9th July 2026, 18:16

Day 2 of Newmarket's July meeting, and with the first four contests LIVE on ITV it's an easy decision to pop over to HQ for Friday's Lucky 15 tips. Our first three selections yesterday all ran superbly, but frustratingly finished second. What's that famous old saying ... ah yes, we go again!

Seven races all told then on the card, which kicks in at 13:50. The G1 Falmouth is the highlight of a wonderful day's sport, with Irish Guineas and Royal Ascot heroine Precise looking to add to her tall reputation.

13:50 Newmarket - Heraldry @ 7/2

Class 2 handicap over 10f, for three-year-olds.

Theme of the day - a small but select field pursuing a nice pot of just in excess of £50k.

Will Buick is invariably a jockey to keep on the right side of at HQ and he's picked up a gorgeous ride here for Team Gosden, in the shape of Heraldry. The Kingman colt has a win and two narrow defeats to his name thus far, showing nicely progressive form over the three spins in novice and maiden company.

Time for the big boys' pants to be worn this afternoon as he steps into very warm handicap company off an opening mark of 89. He's moving up to 10f too from a mile; with help on that front potentially coming from the dam's side, as she was by a multiple Grade 1 winner in America at around this trip.

He's been strong at the finish of his mile heats so far and I'm sure his shrewd connections have few fears on that front. He's getting a wee bit of weight from all his rivals and I'm hoping not only that the extra yardage unlocks a little more improvement, but that he's perhaps a pound or two better than his mark would suggest.

14:25 Newmarket - Senorita Bonita @ 5/2

Two-year-old fillies go 6f in this mouth-watering G2.

I saw Senorita Bonita win on debut at Nottingham under a last-gasp, masterful Oisin Murphy, and she went from that straight to the Queen Mary at the royal meeting a fortnight later, when on just her second-ever run don't forget she finished a superb second of 27, beaten 2l.

Buick was on top on that occasion but Murphy is reunited with the daughter of Starspangledbanner this afternoon and we know she's tough, and talented. A Lowther entry in Ebor week at York underlines the fact, as does a little early look at the G1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh, also next month.

The Crisfords might have a really good filly on their hands and what a race we have in prospect. She's owned by a group called 'Victorious Forever.' Fingers crossed for tomorrow, at least ...

15:00 Newmarket - Wine Dark Sea @ 5/6

Class 2 handicap for older horses, over 1m 6f.

Decent staying handicappers line up for this, and I'm hopeful that the winning form shown 16 days ago at Carlisle can be replicated at this, another stiff track, by Harry Charlton's four-year-old Ulysses gelding Wine Dark Sea.

He's fairly lightly-raced, and has three wins from eight career spins to date. That success in Cumbria was a facile 13l romp, and he's up two grades in class and 6lb in the handicap today.

He looks to be a rapidly-improving type who may have yet more in his locker; something we'll certainly find out this afternoon. Lewis Edmunds, on board last time (for the first time), is again doing the pushing.

15:35 Newmarket - Precise @ 5/6

G1 contest over a mile, for three-year-old fillies.

She didn't fire arguably in the 1000 Guineas here in May, but for me raced on the slowest part of the track and suffered accordingly. It's been Hollywood ever since though, taking the Irish equivalent and then the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. Who, if anyone, can stop Aidan O'Brien's Precise?

This is another daughter of Starspangledbanner, out of a Galileo mare, and in eight career spins has tasted defeat just twice. She seems to take a little while in her races to get fully organised but comes home very powerfully.

She's in a raft of G1 tests over the coming months and connections could also be tempted to step her up in trip. For now she's against her own sex, and getting a nice chunk of weight from any older horses (in particular potentially her main market rival Blue Bolt, who must concede 9lb).

Super race, and a fine champion pops her credentials on the line. I see her staying on powerfully, and taking this huge prize of over £200k. Ryan Moore, of course, is doing the steering.

If all four of our selections won, today's notional 50p win Lucky 15, at the prices indicated (they can of course fluctuate), would return around £98 for a £7.50 total stake. If you can improve upon our selections (of course you can) - then go for it!
