19:00 - Power Fizz @ 3/1

Decent prize-money and an excellent card - let's hope Newcastle is rewarded with a great crowd tonight to enjoy the racing.

We've got a 6f Class 3 handicap for experienced sprinters first up, and we've plumped for a Newmarket raider in the shape of William Haggas's Power Fizz.

One of the yard's jocks Cieren Fallon is on board, one of his two booked rides on the night, and spoiler alert I think he might just ride a double! This fella is a four-year-old Wootton Bassett gelding with an excellent three wins from four starts record thus far.

Interestingly he's been here once before - a comfortable maiden success over 7f in January last year. This is a horse, admittedly not at today's 6f sprint trip, that's contested an Ascot Class 2 (won), and the same level at Goodwood (for £52k - fourth, beaten 5l).

Connections are choosing to kick off his 2026 campaign after a 307-day break over this reduced trip, but the horse has shown in the past on two occasions that he goes well fresh, albeit off shorter periods of inactivity than this.

He might just have the class to prevail, in what's a fascinating heat.

19:30 - Flying Fletcher @ 7/1

One mile is the trip now, in another handicap for experienced types.

The selection is a Middleham Park Racing inmate trained by Richard & Peter Fahey in North Yorkshire and ridden by 3lb-claimer Warren Fentiman - Flying Fletcher.

The five-year-old gelding is by a Gimcrack and Greenham winner who's struck gold three times so far in a 29-race career. Flying Fletcher is a standing dish around here, and seems well suited to its contours.

When last seen three weeks ago he failed by just a head in a contest such as this, off a mark of 74. The naughty old assessor has raised him 3lb but Warren's claim negates that nicely. He's won off this mark previously, and can be extremely competitive again tonight.

Carrying 9st 1lb, then taking off 3lb for his jockey's claim, reads pretty well in the context of this; with key market rivals carrying 2, 3, 5 or 6lb more.

20:00 - City Captain @ 11/2

Another iconic owners group now, The Horse Watchers, and their four-year-old gelded son of Acclaim - City Captain.

This is a 7f Class 4 handicap, and our selection returns to the fray after a break of some 172 days - but rather like our earlier pick Power Fizz this Harriet Bethell inmate also has 'previous' for running well (and winning) in such circumstances.

When last seen at Pontefract in October he won impressively over 6f on soft ground, and given the stiff nature of that track and its hilly pull up the home straight this 7f should suit just fine.

Indeed he's run at the trip before, and even tried a mile once very early on, which in all fairness he didn't appear to stay. His handicap mark of 78 today is career-high territory, but he improved in leaps and bounds last term and connections are probably looking forward to 2026 with a great deal of relish.

As alluded to earlier, Cieren Fallon has been booked, for the first time, and that's seen very much as a positive.

20:30 - Station X @ 9/2

A fine jockey who plunders many a prize at this venue is Paul Mulrennan, and he looks to have a nice chance aboard Bryan Smart's four-year-old gelded sprinting son of Dark Angel - Station X.

Two wins so far from 15 starts, and this is a first run in the north-east; but last time out at Southwell over the minimum trip 35 days ago Station X returned from a 115-day break with a second of 12, beaten a length in this grade.

He drops a furlong tonight but has operated at the trip before, and I get the feeling this one could make a real breakthrough this campaign and climb the ladder after appearing to stall a touch at a certain decent level last year.

Bryan's been at this game for a very long time and his touch with sprinters has been a constant hallmark. Paul's the ideal man to have up top and he's ridden the horse previously, including for two very narrow defeats at York, and Hamilton.

If all four of our selections won, today's notional 50p win Lucky 15, at the prices indicated (they can of course fluctuate), would return around £1,096 for a £7.50 total stake. If you can improve upon our selections (of course you can) - then go for it!
