Lucky 15 tips

There is a much quieter start to the week following the excitement and drama of last week’s Cheltenham Festival, with no Irish meetings on the schedule. However, there are a couple of National Hunt cards in the afternoon as well as an all-weather fixture through the evening to look forward to.

Ffos Las hosts the Class 3 Welsh Gold Cup Handicap Chase, with conditions set to be on the testing side, whilst they also race at Plumpton in the afternoon, beore Wolverhampton provides the evening entertainment. Our expert has selected four strong fancies across the cards for a Lucky 15, which include a Joe Tizzard-trained chasing debutant at Plumpton.

14:45 Plumpton – Kool Kid @ 11/8

Joe Tizzard’s horses often improve plenty for the switch to fences and he has another prime candidate for that trend in the shape of KOOL KID.

The six-year-old began his career under rules with victory in a Hereford bumper in February 2025 but took a while to get the hang of things over hurdles.

The switch to handicaps did the trick when winning on his sixth hurdles start here over two miles last month.

Idling on the run-in that day, he had more in hand than the official winning margin of a length suggests and a 5lb rise shouldn’t cause too many problems.

15:30 Ffos Las – Whiskey Yankee @ 8/13

Sam Thomas has had an excellent season so far and a strike-rate of 29 percent is very healthy indeed. A total of 21 winners from just 72 runners is a great return and he runs WHISKEY YANKEE, who looks well set to get back on track with victory in this one.

The five-year-old finished second to Starzand in a bumper at Ffos Las last spring and got off the mark over hurdles with a smooth success in a Class 3 novice at Ascot in January.

His jumping let him down in a Grade 2 at Haydock after that but the drop in grade and small field should enable him to get a better look at his hurdles.

Whiskey Yankee looks like the one to beat and this is an excellent opportunity to get back on track.

15:45 Plumpton – La Marquise @ 3/1

Jamie Snowden landed a Cheltenham Festival winner with Johnny’s Jury in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle on Friday, so the yard should be full of confidence. He runs LA MARQUISE, who was a smart performer in bumpers.

Winning twice in that sphere, she also placed in a Grade 2 at Aintree behind Diva Luna. Truth be told she has been a little disappointing since winning a Ludlow novice in October 2024 but there were signs of a revival at Wetherby last time out.

A fair third off a 1lb higher mark on that occasion, she had been off for three months and it was her first start since having wind surgery.

The six-year-old can build on that encouraging performance and return to winning ways.

16:00 Ffos Las – Alfie’s Princess @ 4/1

Another one for Sam Thomas, ALFIE’S PRINCESS won well over fences at Wincanton on Boxing Day and that success came off the back of a lengthy 439-day absence.

It is not surprising that she underperformed in Class 2 company at Windsor after that, as it’s very possible that she bounced, with that run may well having come too soon - she was beaten with four fences to go.

Connections have given her time to get over that disappointment and she remains very lightly raced over fences. A much improved performance is anticipated, as is a return to winning ways.
