Lucky 15 Tips: Wincanton looks fun on Thursday for the champ

Wednesday 4th March 2026, 18:01pm

Seven races are scheduled for Wincanton on Thursday, kicking in at 13:37. Sean Bowen, Harry Skelton and Harry Cobden are all in action, and it should be a cracking afternoon's sport.

I've been to Wincanton once, back in the day, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's trainer Paul Nicholls' local stomping ground, and though I can only spot a couple of Ditcheat entries one of them is in the closing bumper, and I'm definitely a fan (Mr Cobden's only booked ride, too). Enjoy!

14:07 - Lady Magic @ 7/2

Novice hurdlers (mares) go just short of 2m in our first leg.

The selection is Lady Magic, a five-year-old daughter of Magician trained in Herefordshire by Tom Symonds. Tom had a winner at Hereford the other day, and looks to register another here with an inmate who scored herself 31 days ago in a Kempton maiden.

She beat 15 rivals at 22/1 under today's pilot Ned Fox (claims 3lb) and the fifth that day has popped out at Newbury to win by a neck against representatives of some mighty yards indeed.

Some substance to the form then, and a bright chance of following up.

15:07 - Frank Stamper @ 5/2

Sean Bowen rides here for Warren Greatrex in a Class 5 handicap hurdle, again over the minimum trip.

It's a first time in the saddle for Sean, but ironically the four-year-old Frankel gelding's usual pilot is Sean's brother James, who's riding one for Olly Murphy at Haydock.

Frank Stamper is still looking for a first success after eight starts but has shown plenty of ability, notably when beaten 1.5l in a similar affair at Plumpton 10 days ago.

Warren inherited the horse from Jamie Osborne in December and this will be his fifth race over timber. Looks to hold every chance, with the booking of Sean, hopefully on the recommendation of his brother, a very positive sign.

15:40 - Bataillon @ 4/1

Jack Stenhouse, a 7lb amateur claimer, rides this eight-year-old gelding for training combo Philip Hobbs and Johnson White.

Bataillon takes his place in this 3m 1f chase with a record of one win in 11 career starts. Having won at Taunton off a mark of 97 in mid-January he made a bad mistake at the last when trying to defy a 6lb penalty a month later, and was beaten 13l.

The selection steps up to a Class 4 this afternoon but this doesn't look a deep race and though I fear Venetia Williams' The Famous Five we must be in with a decent squeak.

16:15 - Ballymackie @ 11/8

Another handicap chase now, this time a 2m 4f Class 4.

No apologies for siding with the champion jockey Sean Bowen once again, this time with an eight-year-old gelding in the care of Sean's prolific patron Olly Murphy.

Ballymackie is lightly raced, with career stats of two wins from just six starts, both of which have come over the larger obstacles. Two point wins were achieved too, when trained by Laura Morgan, before shipping in to Olly's in December.

Those chase wins were in his last two starts, in December at Leicester and 23 days ago at Ayr. He's now rated 15lb higher as a consequence but is very much on an upward curve and could give the champ another success in what's proving to be a stellar campaign.

If all four of our selections won, today's notional 50p win Lucky 15, at the prices indicated (they can of course fluctuate), would return around £250 for a £7.50 total stake. If you can improve upon our selections (of course you can) - then go for it!
