The York Ebor Festival gets underway later today and our Betfred Ambassador Frankie Foster has sent us his Lucky 15 Tips for the action. These four selections as of the time of writing would pay out just over £4,500 for a total £15 stake on an each-way Lucky 15…

Lucky 15 Tips – Wednesday 23 August, 2023

  • Back Mondammej in the 13:50 at York @ 14/1
  • Back Ballymount boy in the 14:25 at York @ 2/1
  • Back Aztec Empire in the 16:10 at York @ 5/1
  • Back Barnwell Boy in the 17:20 at York @ 18/1

You know it is day 1 of a big festival when you steer clear of a few odds on shots to back 20/1 shots in the big handicaps! I am at least one at a price can get us off to a big start this week.

13:50:

Mondammej form exclusively over 5f at York on good or quicker reads 3,3,2,4,2,4. He has put in some poor York efforts but they have been over 6 or on soft. This is definitely his sort of race and he is running off of his lowest mark since 2021. He might not be what he once was in terms of ability but he has still remained fairly consistent this year, I think he has a great EW chance.

14:25:

Out of the top three in the market Cogitate has looked the most stylish, but has been allowed to look that way because Ballymount boy & Edwardian have both raced on slower ground. The form of Ballymount boy clearly sets the standard and although it’s soft ground form I am willing to take the chance that he is still the best horse on a quicker surface, the favourite gets me vote.

16:10:

Aztec Empire is lightly raced on turf and certainly a horse that should still be improving. His most recent run at Newbury over 2 miles on good ground suggested he can be good enough to win a race like this. Oisin Murphy has ridden 4 times already and does the steering once more for us today.

17:20:

Barnwell Boy has been a horse I have been interested in since his debut at Goodwood over 6f. I backed him at the royal meeting when he went off favourite but could only manage midfield, that was over 5f. If the latest poor effort at Goodwood can be put down to the ground that day, then back on a quicker surface, back to 6f, and in a handicap off of a fair mark I think he is overpriced.
