Lucky 15 tips with alan firkins

Time already for our midweek Lucky 15 tips, and I take no persuading to venture south to take in a late Wednesday afternoon/evening card under the lights at Kempton.

Seven races, and jockeys of the calibre of Oisin Murphy, Hollie Doyle, Rossa Ryan and so many others. It all kicks in on the Polytrack at 17:10. Should be a belter.

Today's Horse Races

17:10 - Viamarie @ 7/4

Six unraced two-year-olds line up in a fascinating little novice fillies' heat over 5f.

My selection Viamarie carries the familiar silks of prolific winning owner Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, and is trained by George Boughey at HQ. Regular collaborator Billy Loughnane has the riding assignment.

This daughter of Mehmas is beautifully bred, out of a Shamardal mare, and the Boughey yard are pretty busy right now - visiting the winners' circle five times in the last fortnight from 30 starters.

Not startling in percentage terms but still a positive in my book as to the wellbeing of the string and he's had several placed, too. Nicely drawn in the two box.

18:40 - Grand Karat @ 7/2

Class 3 handicappers go 7f, and here's one I'm really looking forward to seeing on seasonal reappearance.

Grand Karat is a four-year-old Gleneagles gelding with Harry Charlton at Beckhampton. This one enjoyed a superb end to his 2024 campaign, notching up two wins and a close third including a career-best at Southwell, when signing-off.

He comfortably took a similar contest to this by 2l off a mark of 83, and must defy 88 this evening. He was gelded in the summer prior to that barnstorming run alluded to above, and the strong suspicion is that he's going to be even better this term.

Jockey Trevor Whelan knows him well and is in the plate today. Race of the night for me.

19:10 - Court Drive @ 4/1

Kieran Shoemark rides this four-year-old Inns Of Court filly for the first time on the racetrack.

Suffolk-based Gay Kellaway trains, and her charge must shoulder topweight of 10st 2lb in this Class 5 handicap. Court Drive is a course-and-distance scorer - a success achieved here in late January, by a comfortable 4l.

The handicapper had their say and two subsequent efforts off 5lb and then 6lb higher have been hugely respectable without quite troubling the judge. Back at what is evidently something of a favourite track (she's one-from-one here in Sunbury-on-Thames) I've a feeling she can go in again.

Once more we can say she's very nicely boxed, in stall three.

20:10 - Justenzia @ 5/2

The yard of Richard Hannon was flying several weeks ago and though the overall percentages are less impressive now, the winners continue to flow.

Justenzia represents the Wiltshire handler here, a three-year-old Irish-bred filly by a Juddmonte and Eclipse Stakes winner. Just the three spins so far - two of them here interestingly, then a Lingfield finale; all in novice stakes company.

She tries a basement handicap today having been given an opening mark of 63, and after being restricted to a mile so far she steps up to a mile-and-a-half this evening, under excellent 3lb claimer Joe Leavy.

It's hard to be sure that there are not several who might just be well-handicapped, as we know so little about them right now. It's all about promise, stables, the rub of the green, and that feeling.

The name Hannon has carried weight for longer than I care to recall, harking back to Richard senior's storied career. The present era is extremely well-served too, and I'm hoping Justenzia has been found a nice spot for her handicap bow.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £270 for your total £7.50 stake.
