Lucky 15 tips with alan firkins

Looking at the list of outstanding jockeys on parade at Kempton on Wednesday it's no shock that we're happily heading to south-west London for our Lucky 15 tips on Wednesday, February 5. Seven races on the Polytrack, the first of which is at 17:00.

Winter is still with us for now but for all those of us that don't much care for the darkness and the cold, we're getting there, slowly but surely. It's often glorious by Aintree-time - and even Cheltenham has the odd sunny one! All the very best; and we've always got fantastic sport to brighten our days, haven't we?

Today's Horse Races

17:30 - Champagne On Ice @ 9/2

A fillies' novice stakes contest and precious little to go on, form-wise.

However; Champagne On Ice appeals greatly, a three-year-old daughter of No Nay Never out of a Camelot mare, beautifully bred then, and with a certain Oisin Murphy doing the steering.

I understand this one cost £100k as a yearling and makes her belated debut today. Trained by Ed Walker at Newmarket, Mrs J Magnier is listed as one of the owners, and connections' patience could well be rewarded on Wednesday late-afternoon.

Plenty of time during the one-mile trip to get organised and strike at the first time of asking. Obviously a big boost having Oisin on board.

19:00 - Straight A @ 3/1

A winner last time, and now a 3lb lift to overcome.

Straight A is a four-year-old Aclaim gelding, trained by Mick Appleby in Rutland. Freddie Larson has the riding assignment. At Wolves 11 says ago he prevailed by a head and drops in trip here by about 300 yards.

He's won over 7f so that shouldn't be an issue in the slightest, and it's the fact that he comes into this in such good order that's the most compelling factor for me.

He's three-from-eight on the all-weather, with a place thrown in for good measure, so there's a lot to like - and Mick (he of Big Evs fame) has really joined another level of trainer in recent seasons, showing his skill with a variety of horses in his care, notably for the super-shrewd Horse Watchers owning group.

19:30 - Wonder Legend @ 2/1

I've assessed this one's chances in a companion Nap of the Day piece which you can read right HERE.

20:00 - Always Waving @ 7/2

We're visiting the O Murphy well once again, this time on a four-year-old filly in the care of long-time Murphy advocate Andrew Balding.

Always Waving is lightly-campaigned (only four starts to date) customer who took a novice at Southwell quite comfortably at this trip in December. Then last time on handicap debut she was beaten 4l at the same venue, and the assessor has dropped her a couple of pounds as a consequence.

It was still a decent-enough performance and she's surely totally unexposed. Career-start number five could well eke out yet more improvement and Murphy, on top for her debut in November 2023 only, is just the man, reunited, to encourage exactly that.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £350 for your total £7.50 stake.
