Lucky 15

There's Catterick (flat), which must survive a morning inspection, and a Kempton all-weather card on the level on Wednesday. Fairly slim pickings numerically then, but fear not - it's Aintree towards the end of next week after all.

Eight races take place on the sand in Sunbury-on-Thames and it's excellent fare, so it's there we're venturing for Wednesday's Lucky 15.

Lucky 15 tips Wednesday

  • 16:50 Kempton - Brioni @ 11/8
  • 17:25 Kempton - Screaming Eagle @ 2/1
  • 18:30 Kempton - Celtic Warrior @ 2/1
  • 19:00 Kempton - Zero Carbon @ 11/2

16:50 Kempton - Brioni @ 11/8

Division 1 of a nice-looking maiden, over one mile.

The selection Brioni has performed here already with great credit, finishing a close second to a Roger Varian inmate last November who holds Dante, English Derby and Irish Derby entries.

Alan King's three-year-old colt has had just the two runs, showing a pleasing degree of progression from his debut at Sandown. We know he gets the mile readily, is nicely drawn in the six box, and I can see him taking a good deal of stopping.

17:25 Kempton - Screaming Eagle @ 2/1

Division 2, and a mile once again for another group of maidens who could of course quite literally at this stage of their careers be anything.

The selection is another three-year-old colt, by Aidan O'Brien's 2000 Guineas winner Saxon Warrior. Two runs to date for Screaming Eagle, the last of which was here in October where he ran a stormer to be beaten only a short-head.

Hollie Doyle, who rides the Imad Alsager horses (notably Nashwa), was in the saddle last time and has a lovely draw to work with from the two box. Terrific chance.

18:30 Kempton - Celtic Warrior @ 2/1

7f maiden now, and another son of Saxon Warrior in the shape of Celtic Warrior. He's been gelded, so no Classic glories for this one but showed the benefit of that course of action on seasonal reappearance at Southwell 13 days ago.

He was beaten a head by an Archie Watson horse, the pair clear, and it was by some distance the best of his four career starts to date. Oisin Murphy rides for Andrew Balding, and the three box is a draw he won't mind at all.

19:00 Kempton - Zero Carbon e/w 11/2

Experienced 7f handicappers now, and I'm going for a trainer in red-hot form - former top jockey Richard Hughes.

Zero Carbon is a course-and-distance scorer, a five-year-old Acclamation gelding, whose last success was achieved off a mark of 82. He's perched on 84 today, hardly draconian, and given the trainer's streak it requires no great leap of faith to see this one going in, or very close.

Finley Marsh, himself in wonderful order (a sensational 38% strike-rate in the last 14 days), is doing the steering. He's an each-way price as I write so if you're tempted to have a separate single on this one, that would be the recommendation.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £176 for your total £7.50 stake.
