Lucky 15

We've reached the midweek-point, with you-know-what now just a few short days away. Until Epsom finally comes into view, and with it the Betfred Oaks and Betfred Derby, we're going to enjoy an afternoon at one of my favourite tracks, Beverley.

Their eight-race card kicks off at 13:40, and racing is invariably dramatic, competitive and compelling. Here we go!

Lucky 15 tips Wednesday

Beverley

  • 13:40 - Unthinkable @ 5/6
  • 14:40 - Puella Law @ 6/4
  • 15:10 - Zozimus @ 2/1
  • 17:15 - The Grey Lass @ 7/1

13:40 - Unthinkable @ 5/6

Billy The Kid Loughnane rides this two-year-old filly for regular partner-in-winners George Boughey.

Three thoroughly respectable career efforts so far in maidens, and for me she boasts the most convincing form going into this claimer. This is a very stiff 5f, as it is at Leicester, where Unthinkable ran extremely well in April, finishing a clear second.

The ability to find in those last few yards up this hill will be key, and she ticks that box for me.

14:40 - Puella Law @ 6/4

A maiden this time, over 7.5f, and another filly.

Puella Law is trained by John and Sean Quinn, and Jason Hart rides. It will be her third career start at this quirky, gorgeous venue, and the previous two visits have both yielded second-place finishes. Combined losing distance? Less than 2l.

It's payday in my book today, and as she was running on stoutly at the finish last time over course-and-distance, I'm hoping she'll arrive to deliver a withering late challenge and deservedly lose her maiden tag.

15:10 - Zozimus @ 2/1

To an experienced mid-range handicapper now, trained by David O'Meara and ridden by Danny Tudhope.

The trainer acquired the horse in January '23 from Donnacha O'Brien no less, and Zozimus is owned by the ultra-shrewd Horse Watchers syndicate. I don't believe he's scored for them yet despite many consistent and laudable runs, but this Class 4 heat looks right up his street.

He's been in hotter, higher-rated contests on the whole over the last twelve months and it's high time that he troubled the judge. Today could be the day.

17:15 - The Grey Lass @ 7/1

The lucky last, and a horse trained by genuine Yorkshire 'royalty' - Michael and David Easterby.

The Grey Lass gets Conor Planas on top for this 5f apprentice handicap, and for me he's one of the top jocks in the field. Both trainer(s) and pilot could certainly do with a winner, but that's entirely possible after a pleasing reappearance run after wind surgery at Catterick 16 days ago.

He faded understandably late in the piece, and at a track where he's won in the past off a mark of 47, racing off 46 today seems like a nice omen to me.

It's Conor's only mount on the card, and while I'll not attach Oisin Murphy-type significance to that fact, it's still something to weigh up. I like it.

If you're playing, have fun, take care, and good luck.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £178 for your total £7.50 stake.
