Lucky 15

We've got another bumper day of racing to look forward to on Wednesday, April 24th. National Hunt fans, as the season reaches its final days, have a feast - Perth, Ludlow, Uttoxeter, Taunton, and Bellewstown. Flat devotees are catered for courtesy of Catterick and Gowran Park. All in all, a cracking day's sport.

It's to North Yorkshire we'll journey then for our Lucky 15 tips, and the lovely countryside track at Catterick, a course I've had the pleasure of visiting before and trust that I will again. Nothing to write home about yesterday, with a non-runner and Ryan Moore winning on just about the only horse I DIDN'T tip him up on! As someone once famously said - we go again ..

Lucky 15 tips Wednesday

  • 15:17 Catterick - Moyola @ 6/1
  • 16:17 Catterick - Origintrail @ 4/1
  • 16:50 Catterick - Buckshaw Village @ 9/2
  • 17:25 Catterick - Clionia @ 5/1

15:17 Catterick - Moyola @ 6/1

Three-year-olds go 5f, in what's likely to be easy ground. The selection Moyola represents noted NH trainer Lucinda Russell, who increasingly seems to be dabbling a little on the flat these days. The excellent Oisin Orr, attached to the Fahey yard, takes the mount.

He won narrowly on the all-weather at Newcastle last time 10 weeks ago, and has run previously here with credit, under this very jockey. He's a hold-up horse, so expect Oisin to smuggle him into the contest late - and do the business, fingers crossed.

16:17 Catterick - Origintrail @ 4/1

6f now, small field, but a trainer, Ben Haslam, in scintillating form. Last 14 days? He's operating at a 60% success rate. Serious stuff. Origintrail gets the vastly-experienced Paul Mulrennan up top, but he's been on board once previously, in May '22, at Ripon - and won!

The mare has kept better company than this on and off too, and last summer she wasn't beaten far in a York Class 2 off a mark of 84. It's just 77 today, and she's got a great squeak in this Class 5 for me.

16:50 Catterick - Buckshaw Village @ 9/2

7f Class 5 handicap - and a very experienced five-year-old Birchwood gelding with Declan Carroll since September last, but formerly in the hands of Richard Fahey.

Buckshaw Village ran a blinder at Thirsk on seasonal reappearance a fortnight ago, with a performance pretty well up there with some of his best over the years. Goes with give in the ground, and though the naughty old handicapper has raised him 3lb for that fine run he has a great chance in my book.

Harrison Shaw, on board last time, again takes the mount.

17:25 Catterick - Clionia @ 5/1

Another 7f heat, for three-year-olds this time, and a selection from the Rutland yard of Mick Appleby. Clionia has raced on the all-weather of late, unsurprisingly given his trainer's typical modus operandi, but the filly arrives for this turf contest in decent nick.

Stayed on well at Chelmsford last time over this trip, under Billy Loughnane, and the wily Joe Fanning takes over today. This is very modest territory indeed but Clionia returned a career-high RPR last time, and off just 8st 9lb might have been found an ideal opportunity by her ultra-shrewd handler.

If you're playing, have fun, and good luck!

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.25p each-way Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £560 for your total £7.50 stake.
