Lucky 15

Morning all. Jump racing on Wednesday Jan 17th comes from Southwell, and there's all-weather fare from Newcastle and Kempton.

Two good winners in our Lucky 15 yesterday, advised at 2/1 and 9/2, returned at 2s and a whopping 15/2. Most gratifying. We're heading for the sand again today, to Kempton's Polytrack surface, where the action takes place between 17.30 and 20.00.

This is an example of how to put together a Lucky 15 - if you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £136 for your total £7.50 stake.

Popular legend confirms that Fred, 'The Bonus King,' invented the 'Lucky' series of bets and their bonuses. Want the lowdown - all the ins and outs? My colleague Adam has set out all you need to know with this handy guide - take a look by clicking here.

Lucky 15 tips Wednesday

Kempton

  • 18.00 - McCauley's Tavern @ 9/4
  • 19.00 - Havana Smoke @ 5/2
  • 19.30 - No News @ 6/4
  • 20.00 - Wadacre Grace @ 15/8

18.00 - McCauley's Tavern @ 9/4

Amateur jockeys in action here, and I can't believe I'm deserting my regular go-to guy under these circumstances - the prolific Simon Walker.

In this sphere he's what Patrick Mullins is to bumpers, and he's got to have a great chance with Back Tomorrow. However, I'm siding with McCauley's Tavern, who scored nicely here in a slightly higher grade two weeks ago for the magnificent Billy Loughnane.

His father Mark trains, and the 4-yr-old gelding is owned by one of the ultra-shrewd Horse Watchers syndicates (No.11). He's up 4lb for that course-and-distance success but prior to joining Mark in March he operated at loftier levels for Fozzy Stack in Ireland and he might just be well handicapped off 64 here.

His jockey Mr Eireann Cagney operated at a 19% strike-rate last term (31 runs, 6 wins, 5 seconds, 1 third, 5 fourth). He's generally there and thereabouts and his booking is very much viewed as a positive. His stats are even more impressive when confined to the all-weather. Huge chance in my book.

19.00 - Havana Smoke @ 5/2

3-yr-old Havana Grey gelding, trained by Dylan Cunha in Newmarket, and ridden by Kieran O'Neill.

Havana Grey stepped down into this Class 6 level last time and almost won at Newcastle, losing out by half-a-length moving up to this 7f trip. He tries it again today on just his seventh career start and can put that experience to good use.

Nicely drawn in the one box.

19.30 - No News @ 6/4

No News won here two weeks ago, following up a December success, and looks for a hat-trick tonight. Steps up to a mile from 7f, and though limited attempts at the longer trip have proved inconclusive to me, he's arguably in the form of his career and looks well worth another try.

Legendary trainer John Jenkins saddles, and Lewis Edmonds is on top, as per. It's a very tight handicap with just 5lb separating top to bottom, and No News' mark of 59 looks workable. Being drawn three won't do him any harm, either.

20.00 - Wadacre Grace @ 15/8

Cracking connections here - trainer Charlie Johnston raids from Middleham Moor in North Yorkshire, and winner-machine Rossa Ryan eye-catchingly takes the mount.

Wadacre Grace won off a mark of 67 at Chelmsford in November and has run very well without winning in four subsequent spins. The 5-yr-old mare looks a cut above her rivals to me and the experienced course-and-distance scorer can benefit from Ryan's magic and get her head in front once again, off 68.
