Lucky 15 Tips: Promising types do battle at Southwell

Back to earth this week after a stratospheric few days on Merseyside, and a sensational Grand National Festival. Spring is just about my favourite time of the sporting year as it's quite frankly all going on wherever you look. The Betfred Guineas meeting at Newmarket takes place on the first weekend in May, then there's the Dante/Musidora at York, all the sharp-end footie ... far too much to list.
Right - regular readers will know I love an afternoon/evening on the sand, so let's pop off to Southwell for a seven-race programme on the Tapeta. Rossa Ryan and Billy Loughnane are just two of the top names present and superb entertainment looks assured.
Lucky 15 Tips - Tuesday, April 8
Southwell
First up - in recent days the Queen of Southwell, Hayley Turner, has indicated that she's hanging up her boots immediately after a stunning 25-year riding career to start a family. Fittingly her final winner was here last week - Spirit Of Jura, tipped up by yours truly in this feature and returned @ 5/1, though it was advised at even bigger!
Well played, Hayley - superb jockey, tremendous ambassador for the sport, and by all accounts a very, very nice lady.
18:30 - Radio Star @ 6/4
5f sprint maidens (Class 5), and a well-bred Starspangledbanner filly.
The three-year-old Radio Star is housed at Ollie Sangster's Wiltshire base (Manton). She hasn't run since November, 153 days ago, but in five career starts she's definitely shown promise and undoubted ability.
She's out of an Acclamation mare too, so she really should be able to bomb along a bit. Her experience, alongside what she's achieved already (short-head second at Nottingham on that last spin, plus two other placed efforts) should put her bang in the frame here.
She'll surely pick up one of these and why not tonight? Sam James, on board last time, is again in the plate.
19:30 - Nazuki @ 5/6
Here's hoping it's a big night for Ollie Sangster!
We're with him once again in the shape of Nazuki. It's another filly, this time in a 6f contest restricted to the fairer sex. Nazuki has had two career starts, both here, and has shown nicely progressive form to be second and then take one of these novices very comfortably in November.
I'm taking a chance that Ollie has his string in grand fettle because in my book, from just these two entries, he's got an outstanding chance of notching a double.
Course form here is so important and those two reconnaissance missions can prove vital. Trevor Whelan takes the mount.
20:00 - Mickey Mongoose @ 8/1
Another course-and-distance scorer, from Olly Williams' Market Rasen yard.
The five-year-old Lope De Vega gelding Mickey Mongoose ran here 18 days ago in a similar affair and was only denied by 1.5l, off a mark of 52. He was probably in front way too soon (3f pole), and I'd say he needs to be smuggled into proceedings late in the piece, though that's not been his run style thus far.
I'm hoping Warren Fentiman, who does know the horse, can perhaps employ a little more restraint and play him late? Looks well worth a blast.
His 5lb claim can come in handy too, and once again his mark is 52, unchanged.
20:30 - Prince Of India @ 10/3
The lucky last is a Class 4 7f handicap, one of the best heats on the card, and an old (not remotely old!) favourite of this feature has stayed on to hopefully take this nightcap.
Rossa Ryan rides Prince Of India for HQ handler Marco Botti, and the progressive three-year-old Wootton Bassett colt looks to make the step up from winning novice to handicap company.
Just 22 days ago he won nicely at this trip at Wolves, and has a mark here of 77. His sire was a magnificent two-year-old but he's also out of a Galileo mare, so we can expect a degree of versatility perhaps going forward in terms of trip.
Fascinating little teaser, and looking forward to this one very much.
This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!
The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £260 for your total £7.50 stake.
