Lucky 15

There's some compelling racing on Tuesday May 7, and don't forget it's Chester later this week, too. That means York's Dante meet is imminent, and from there the Betfred Derby, Royal Ascot ... steady now. What a prospect.

For Tuesday's Lucky 15 tips we're taking in Southwell, who have an eight-race late afternoon/early evening extravaganza kicking-off at 16:42. There's no UK flat racing, but a meeting on the level in Ireland from Navan. In addition to Southwell, jump racing takes place at Fakenham, Ffos Las, Hereford, and over in Ireland at Ballinrobe.

Lucky 15 tips Tuesday

Southwell

  • 17:12 - Ernest Gray @ 5/2
  • 18:42 - Mersey Street @ 11/4
  • 19:42 - Solar System @ 2/1
  • 20:12 - Eaton Anne @ 11/4

17:12 - Ernest Gray @ 5/2

Tom Cannon rides this seven-year-old Walk In The Park gelding, for trainer Alan King.

Ernest Gray is a course-and-distance scorer in splendid form in 2024. He was placed when last seen at Donny 65 days ago, running off a mark of 116. He's up just a pound for that and in the kind of form he's shown must have a very bright chance.

Alan's had a couple of winners in the last fortnight and Tom knows the horse very well. 'Ernest' started out winning a couple of bumpers, including first-time up in his native Ireland, before making his way over to Wiltshire. Last time out was a career-best, and there could be more to come.

18:42 - Mersey Street @ 11/4

The O'Neills train this six-year-old gelding, who makes his handicap debut today.

3lb claimer Jack Hogan has been on top before, and helps reduce the steadier of 11st 10lb. Stable jockey Jonjo Jr is at Hereford, so it's a good opportunity for Jack, who's had a couple of winners in the last fortnight from just nine rides.

Mersey Street has had six spins in total, including one PTP, so he's got a bit of useful experience. It wouldn't be a great surprise if his top yard has him straight for this first run in 129 days, and it doesn't look a terribly deep contest.

19:42 - Solar System @ 2/1

Lovely to see those fabled green and gold hoops somewhere other than on the biggest racedays, confirming owner JP McManus' terrific support for racing at every level.

His Solar System is handled by Phillip Hobbs and Johnson White, and will be ridden by Micheal Nolan. He took a handicap hurdle at Fontwell last time off 95 and he's up to 101 today, and in a slightly higher grade.

However; he's only five, and might just have appreciated the better ground last time in what was a pretty smooth success. Word is that the ground will be decent again on Tuesday, so I'm hoping he can defy the penalty.

20:12 - Eaton Anne @ 11/4

The lucky last, a maiden hurdle, and a selection in Eaton Anne that's had just the one run so far.

That was a PTP in November last year, and he was promptly bought for £25k by new connections. He's now with rising training force Olly Murphy, and Fergus Gregory takes the mount.

Sean Bowen rode plenty of winners for Olly when he was chasing the jockeys' title over the last few months and Olly is red-hot (10 winners in the last fortnight, for a strike-rate of 33%).

Sean's at Ffos Las on Tuesday so Fergus, a very able pilot, has the opportunity to shine. Sure to have been well-schooled, and the second in his point has won, too.

If you're playing, have fun, take care, and good luck!

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £200 for your total £7.50 stake.
