Lucky 15

Still digesting all the excitement of the Betfred Derby Festival weekend, and that electric performance from City Of Troy. Aidan O'Brien, eh? Unbelievable. Just ponder for a moment - almost at exactly the same time in history, we have two Irish gentlemen in Willie Mullins (67) and Aidan (54), dominating and redefining the art of training the thoroughbred - setting records that might well stand for a very, very long time. Perhaps for ever. Amazing. Just mind-blowing.

For our Lucky 15 tips on Tuesday we're going to visit Wolverhampton for their eight-race jamboree, which kicks in at 17:30. In-form Dave Probert is here, as well as Silvestre De Sousa. Should be a cracking early-evening.

Lucky 15 Tips Tuesday

Wolverhampton

  • 17:30 - Where's Clare @ 11/8
  • 19:00 - Beylerbayi @ 3/1
  • 19:30 - Little Empire @ 5/2
  • 21:00 - Golden Myrrh @ 4/1

17:30 - Where's Clare @ 11/8

The Johnstons (perhaps that should just be Charlie) train this one, for the Rooneys. A two-year-old Mehmas filly that's had one run to date; an excellent head-second at Carlisle to a George Boughey inmate that's won a couple.

Where's Clare returned a Racing Post Rating of 81, and sets a good standard for the newcomers to aspire to. It was restricted to fillies in Cumbria and she's got some boys to put away here, but that pipe-opener was really promising and if repeating her prominent run-style on Tuesday is well-berthed in the one box.

The vastly-experienced, evergreen Joe Fanning takes the mount, and if indeed blazing a trail then no-one sets the fractions quite like Joe.

19:00 - Beylerbayi @ 3/1

A modest little 7f Class 5 handicap. The selection Beylerbayi is trained by Ian Williams, and Cieren Fallon is on top.

Ian is the third trainer to look after the four-year-old Invincible Spirit gelding, and has him in fine fettle at the minute. Last time at Nottingham just a couple of days ago he finished third, beaten just over a length in a similar affair over about 300 yards further than this trip.

He's yet to strike for Williams but three second-placed finishes indicates that a little race is almost certain to fall into his lap - hopefully tonight.

19:30 - Little Empire @ 5/2

5lb claimer Tommie Jakes, used by several trainers, is on board, and he's got an impressive four rides on the card all told.

This certainly looks to be his brightest chance of a win, a four-year-old Holy Roman Emperor gelding who won a shade cosily at Ayr yesterday (Monday). Turning out again so quickly is a tip in itself for me.

Little Empire is evidently in fine fettle and won here last month too, under this jockey. A very interesting little contest, with Jakes negating the 5lb hike for Monday's success. Similar trip, at around a mile and change.

21:00 - Golden Myrrh @ 4/1

The lucky last - and a Ralph Beckett-trained three-year-old Frankel filly.

One run at two - a Newbury maiden, finishing just over 3l away from Rosallion no less, the recent Irish 2000 Guineas winner. This season's three spins have been ordinary, and on handicap debut at Nottingham last time she weakened late (1m 2f). She gets a drop in grade to a Class 6 today, and has half-a-furlong less to travel.

On that Newbury promise, and her breeding, a decent run is almost inevitable at some point from Golden Myrrh and in this modest company she can score for Rob Hornby.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £260 for your total £7.50 stake.
