Lucky 15 Tips: Goodwood Day One – just Glorious

What a time of the year - Goodwood in its glorious finery, strutting its stuff upon that gorgeous, verdant stage with the Downs as a sensational backdrop. Lucky enough to have been to the meeting a couple of times, and it's simply awesome.
We'll be basing our Lucky 15 selections on the aptly-named 'Glorious' meeting all week, and on this opening Tuesday it's an EIGHT-race card no less, kicking in at 13:20. As we bask in the tremendous accomplishments of our Lionesses, let's enjoy some high-quality contests at one of the most visually-stimulating sporting theatres on the planet.

Goodwood
13:55 - Zavateri @ 13/2
A cracking 7f Group 2, and a selection that's enjoyed success so far at a furlong less.
Just the two runs for this two-year-old son of Without Parole, out of a Siyouni mare. He's trained by Eve Johnson Houghton at Blewbury in Oxfordshire, and will be ridden by regular pilot Charles Bishop.
Debut - cosy win at Salisbury in a little novice. Then at Newmarket 19 days ago, plunged into G2 company, he ran out a convincing winner by a length at odds of 18/1, beating a small field comprising entrants from the likes of Messrs Appleby, O'Brien, Balding and Walker.
That alone on only his second racecourse appearance would be grounds for optimism enough, but stepping up a furlong this afternoon for Zavateri could be golden. His sire raced just once at two, and that was over a mile - a trip he covered himself in glory at subsequently, including winning the G1 St James's Palace Stakes the following season.
Siyouni on the dam's side provides the perfect influence too, winning at both 5f, 7f, and getting to within 2.25l of the great Canford Cliffs in the St James's Palace at a mile. 'Canford' remember was once seriously thought capable of lowering Frankel's colours in the Sussex at this very meeting.
I'm expecting natural improvement then not only by virtue of a further run after such limited experience so far, but also for the additional yardage covered.
I hope on this quirky track that lack of 'heat of battle' know-how doesn't hinder, but having won over Newmarket's undulations and idiosyncrasies in a tough old heat provides further grounds for optimism.
Fantastic renewal, and I like his price, too.
14:30 - Kinross @ 10/3
There could hardly be a greater contrast now in terms of experience. This fella is 11-from-35 all told and a super-talented veteran eight-year-old who showed last time that he's most assuredly no back-number.
Kinross in full cry is a sight to behold, invariably coming from off the pace to cut down whatever's in his path. He was third in this last year but with a performance well below his optimum.
He lines up this afternoon after a superb second beaten a head in a Haydock G3 some 59 days ago, and has won on this unique circuit before, in this very race - twice!
Ralph Beckett trains and the great Rossa Ryan rides, the seventh time he's partnered him on the track, and if the rain that seems to be around continues to fall upon Chichester and environs connections will not be unhappy. The advertised 'good' is fine but with just a bit of added juice, even better.
Expect him to be played late, and remind us all what a fine champion he is.
15:05 - Scandinavia @ 9/4
Aidan O'Brien saddles two in the G1 Goodwood Cup, and it's the sole three-year-old in the field that I'm siding with.
Scandinavia took a Newmarket G3 by a street last time, some 19 days ago, at 1m 5f. It was a handsome career-best and the son of Justify has looked for a while now like a horse that needs an extreme test.
This 2m trip should be perfect, and he's getting a stone from the older horses, notably Ballydoyle stablemate Illinois, winner of the G3 Ormonde in May and runner-up in the Betfred St Leger last autumn.
French Master and Sweet William are fabulous yardsticks and this looks to be a really good renewal. That appetite for distance, plus the weight advantage, could prove crucial.
15:45 - Redorange @ 5/1
An occasional combination now that always demands respect and attention - trainer Clive Cox and jockey Rossa Ryan.
They link up with the three-year-old Mehmas gelding Redorange, in superb form for his last three spins at this 5f minimum, including a win at Chester off 86 and a 0.75l defeat at Ascot 17 days ago off 99.
He's up to a mark of 100 now but he's earned every ounce and looked unlucky last time. The jockey, a favourite of mine and doubtless of many, is purring along with a 20% success rate over the last 14 days, and his trainer is in a similar postcode with 18%.
He has the scope to be better than a Class 2 handicapper in my book and can take the first steps to proving that this afternoon. He looks to have a great draw in the 18 box and I'm extremely hopeful.
This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!
The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £670 for your total £7.50 stake.
