Lucky 15 tips with alan firkins

Spot of housekeeping first - two winners on both Friday and Saturday graced the L15 feature, and we were within inches of making it three, which would have been great. ITV winners were more difficult to come by on Saturday, but we attack a new week with relish. Two weeks to go until Cheltenham - let's enjoy it before the Cotswolds' largest garden party begins in earnest on March 11.

As for Tuesday's Lucky 15 tips, let's follow tried and trusted methodology and visit Wolverhampton's Dunstall Park track for an eight-race card that kicks in at 16:55. Quick glance at race one reveals names like Rossa Ryan and Billy Loughnane. I'm sold.

Lucky 15 Tips - Tuesday, February 25

Wolverhampton

  • 17:30 - Come On John @ 5/2
  • 18:30 - Cemlyn @ 9/4
  • 19:30 - Charlatan @ 2/1
  • 20:00 - Star Time @ 2/1

Today's Horse Races

17:30 - Come On John @ 5/2

A six-year-old course and distance scorer is first up for us, with Hector Crouch in the plate.

Trainer James Owen raids from his Newmarket base with this Kodiac gelding, dropping back to 9.5f from predominantly 10f-12f trips of late. That looks sure to suit, especially here at Wolves, and though James has had Come On John only since late October he's already has 11 races for new connections.

Entered up at Newcastle on Thursday but hopefully will show up in the Midlands and go very close.

18:30 - Cemlyn @ 9/4

A three-year-old filly now; one whose turn looks to be close at hand.

Cemlyn has had four runs to date, quietly progressive affairs at sprint trips. Last time in her first handicap, off 64, she was second of ten beaten 1.75l at Southwell - a fine effort, and she's been raised a pound for her trouble by the assessor.

Dave Probert, on board for her third run, again rides for trainer Ed Bethell which I see as a big plus. Dave is high-class, experienced, and it sounds daft to say it in this way but he rides winners, if you get my drift.

Great chance.

19:30 - Charlatan @ 2/1

This is my strongest fancy on the card - a five-year-old Mastercraftsman gelding trained by Dave Simcock and ridden by 7lb claimer Taryn Langley.

Charlatan has four wins from 14 all-weather outings, including success over this course and distance. Last time on this track just seven days ago he finished second, beaten a head, and was running on nicely at the business end under today's pilot.

His mark of 54 is unchanged, and with the horse in such terrific, consistent form, given luck in running I'm very hopeful that Taryn can plot a telling late path and take the spoils.

20:00 - Star Time @ 2/1

Always a decent angle, getting involved with an Alan King/Rossa Ryan production.

A four-year-old Time Test gelding here - Star Time, another course and distance scorer. In fact in two visits here the form book says win and close-up second, though I don't honestly think we've seen anything near his best just yet in a fairly brief, six-race career thus far.

There's surely a good deal more to come from this beautifully-bred individual (dam by Sea The Stars, too), and top gun for hire Ryan is reached for. I'm taking the hint.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £160 for your total £7.50 stake.

Fred, 'The Bonus King,' invented the 'Lucky' series of bets and their bonuses. My colleague Adam has set out all you need to know with this handy guide - take a look by clicking here.
