Lucky 15

Small but select in terms of equine action on Tuesday, April 2, with flat racing coming from Pontefract (turf), and Wolverhampton (Tapeta all-weather). We also have an afternoon of jumping at Ludlow.

I love Ponte, but winner-finding in deep ground at their first meet of the season is a test I'm going to swerve in favour of Wolves, blessed as it is with the likes of Oisin Murphy, Billy Loughnane, Rossa Ryan, Hayley Turner, Silvestre De Sousa and other stellar names in welcome attendance. A solitary 5/1 winner in yesterday's ITV piece, so can we do better? Here we go;

Lucky 15 tips Tuesday

  • 17:30 Wolverhampton - Rust E Boy @ 3/1
  • 18:00 Wolverhampton - Hampden @ 4/1
  • 18.30 Wolverhampton - Horse Whisperer @ 3/1
  • 19.30 Wolverhampton - Tarbat Ness @ 11/2

17:30 Wolverhampton - Rust E Boy @ 3/1

Cards on the table early - I'm hoping that last season's leading all-weather rider Rossa Ryan is going to have a field day at Wolverhampton on Tuesday.

He's got six booked rides on the card and I'm tipping him up in three of my four; the first of which is Dave Evans' Rust E Boy. He's a three-year-old gelded Irish-bred, stretching out to this 8.5f trip for just the second time.

He looks well worth the try given recent running-on efforts over shorter, and Rossa nearly did the business with him here over 6f in February. He's yet to get his head in front but 18 days ago at this venue he produced a performance just about as good as any he's managed in the past.

Fingers crossed that the brilliant Ryan can help Rust E Boy turn recent consistent displays into a timely win.

18:00 Wolverhampton - Hampden @ 4/1

Rossa once again, this time aboard a Tom Ward-trained three-year-old Night Of Thunder gelding, sent from his Upper Lambourn base.

Hampden is one of the most experienced of these maidens, having run three times. The last was encouragingly his best - beaten less than a length in a course-and-distance novice back in October.

That looked a warm contest, won by a Gosden inmate with a George Boughey-trained former winner in third. There are plenty who bring promise and potential, but Hampden very nearly sets the standard and as I invariably remark at this point, the booking of Ryan is highly significant.

18.30 Wolverhampton - Horse Whisperer @ 3/1

Another potent combination in tandem here - trainer Chris Dwyer and jockey Silvestre De Sousa.

SDS rode this one at Southwell 19 days ago over 5f. The Invincible Spirit filly ran on well enough, and is entitled to come on for what was her first run for 118 days. She took a Brighton nursery off a mark of 59 in August and races off 60 on Tuesday.

The pair struck at Lingfield just over a week ago and now back over 6f she has a bright chance in my book from the three box.

19.30 Wolverhampton - Tarbat Ness @ 11/2

Rossa once again, engaged by Newmarket handler John Berry for his five-year-old staying handicapper. Ryan was on board last time at Catterick in the autumn, and they failed by just half-a-length in this grade and at pretty much this extreme 2m 1/2f trip.

The horse has improved considerably since a couple of modest Wolverhampton efforts back in 2022 and Berry had a winner at Chelmsford just a few days ago. Blinkers are applied, and in a fascinating heat he's got a bright chance of a second career win.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £560 for your total £7.50 stake.
