Lucky 15 Tips: Hail the return of The Kid from Down Under

A brand new week for the column - my involvement at any rate - and though weekend was full of fabulous action it's fair to say that winner-finding was no cake-walk. If you found a few, respect. Thank goodness for Kevin Ryan's classy miler Apiarist at Chelmsford, who did the business for us in the ITV piece despite a slightly troubled passage. A fruitful turf season beckons no doubt.
For Tuesday's Lucky 15 tips I'm heading to Newcastle, and their seven-race card on the Tapeta all-weather. The curtain's up at 15:38 and the outstanding Billy Loughnane has got a promising-looking book of rides.
Lucky 15 Tips - Tuesday, January 14
Newcastle
15:38 - Jujubella @ 10/11
Intriguing four-year-old Too Darn Hot filly steps up to 12.5f, and bids to defy an 8lb hike.
Easy win the last day for Jujubella on January 2, under Paul Mulrennan, here at Newcastle over 1m 2f. Sire Too Darn Hot nearly won a Dante Stakes at York over half a furlong further but never attempted to stretch out this far.
Trainer Lucinda Russell has secured the services of Warren Fentiman for this apprentice contest and he was being praised to the skies by Paul's wife Adele during ITV's racing coverage last Saturday. He's much in demand, as evidenced by the number of trainers he's ridden for of late.
Jujubella can be switched off and come with a late challenge all being well, proving the step up to be a master stroke, and defying that new mark of 58.
16:13 - Swiss Ace @ 9/4
A young jockey a little further down the road in terms of experience if not age is Billy Loughnane, back in recent days from a successful stint in Australia.
Billy didn't take long to remind us of his talent, doing the business at Lingfield on Monday afternoon. He's very special; no question.
The teenage sensation is aboard Swiss Ace, for North Yorkshire trainer Ruth Carr. The seven-year-old Kingman gelding is a course-and-distance scorer and takes a slight drop today into Class 5 company for the very first time.
It's been a while since he last struck gold but this mark of 75 looks very tempting, he's super-consistent, and of course gets the services of Billy The Kid. Time to revisit the winners' enclosure for career victory number five.
16:45 - Above @ 5/2
A 5f sprint now, a horse trained by one of our very best at handling the speedsters, and once again young Mr Loughnane has the riding assignment.
Above is housed with Robert Cowell at Six Mile Bottom, in Newmarket. Now eight years young, this gelding has been placed on his last two starts at Southwell and Kempton, and is certainly knocking on the door.
He was rated as high as 100 in his heyday, with Archie Watson, but retains plenty of enthusiasm and ability. The last two fine efforts were both achieved off a mark of 72, the same as today, and one of them was over today's distance, though he gets 6f well enough too.
Billy might just produce the bit of magic required to secure career win number six, though he's also been placed second or third a total of 15 times in his 47 races all told.
17:45 - Pals Battalion @ 10/3
A four-year-old Invincible Army gelding I tipped up to win one of these 17 days ago at the track, and he duly obliged.
David O'Meara trains, at Upper Helmsley in North Yorkshire. Regular pilot David Nolan in on top, and the horse runs in the famous Middleham Park Racing silks.
Last time out he delayed his challenge until pretty much the last moment and won, I thought, a shade cosily. That delay was partly due to some traffic, but it was a smooth success nevertheless and I got the distinct impression that all buttons and gears were not quite being pushed or engaged.
He's up just 2lb to a mark of 82 given the winning margin was only a neck and after 17 lifetime starts he's already chasing career win number five today. This is a nice horse that connections are having a great deal of fun with and I'm sure there will be more successes to come, hopefully starting at around tea-time on Tuesday.
This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!
The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £145 for your total £7.50 stake.
