Thursday Lucky 15 Tips: Rossa’s the boy to rekindle the flame

Lucky 15

Two solid winners (15/8 returned 13/8, and 5/6 returned 5/4), plus a third and a fourth yesterday evening at Kempton. We flagged up the prospects of Oisin Murphy and Rossa Ryan, and the pair had five of the seven scorers between them. Class will invariably prevail.

Thursday's jumping action comes from Taunton, Wetherby and Ludlow, while it's to Chelmsford's evening, flat all-weather meet that we're journeying for our suggested Lucky 15. Murphy and Ryan resume hostilities, plus the likes of Billy the Kid, Hollie Doyle, Hayley Turner et al.

For me this is a golden age of flat jockeys. Prodigious young talents complementing and challenging established stars, brilliant women, gifted apprentices bursting through. Terrific to behold.

This is an example of how to put together a Lucky 15 - if you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £380 for your total £7.50 stake.

Popular legend confirms that Fred, 'The Bonus King,' invented the 'Lucky' series of bets and their bonuses. Want the lowdown - all the ins and outs? My colleague Adam has set out all you need to know with this handy guide - take a look by clicking here.

Lucky 15 tips Thursday

Chelmsford

  • 18.30 - Magical Hope @ 10/3
  • 19.00 - Monkmoor Pip @ 7/2
  • 20.00 - Viewfromthestars @ 11/4
  • 20.30 - Marion's Boy @ 7/2

18.30 - Magical Hope @ 10/3

Rarely do I select a horse that hasn't run before, but here's the exception.

We have before us a 3-yr-old Frankel filly out of a Dubawi mare, trained by Charlie Appleby and wearing Godolphin blue. That's enough to get the juices flowing; and if you factor in Charlie's current 41% strike-rate in the last 14 days, I'm in.

The equally beguiling David Probert is in the plate.

19.00 - Monkmoor Pip @ 7/2

Oisin Murphy rides this 4-yr-old gelding for trainer Hugo Palmer.

This is a basement Class 6 affair over a mile, and 'Pip' has run well too in a slightly higher grade. Just over 3 weeks ago at Wolves he was beaten only 0.5l, running on, and recording a career joint-best Racing Post rating.

In-form then; and gets Murph up top, who actually won on him back in September, on debut.

20.00 - Viewfromthestars @ 11/4

The evergreen, super-polished Hayley Turner takes the ride on Mark Usher's 5-yr-old gelding.

A sprinter who's evidently in a little bit of form after returning from a 139-day break in December. Three subsequent runs have seen the horse knocking on the door, and last time here a month ago under Hayley was beaten only 3l after running wide and finishing well.

Drawn in the one box, Hayley can hopefully smuggle him into the race on the inside and strike for home late in the piece.

20.30 - Marion's Boy @ 7/2

The great Rossa Ryan rides this 7-yr-old Mastercraftsman gelding for trainer Roger Teal.

Typical Ryan booking for me, this. Horse rated as highly as 80 in the past slipping to a very tempting-looking mark (62), and showing signs that there may yet be some oomph left under the bonnet.

What better current exponent than Rossa to turn that into a potential score tonight, in the lucky last.

He gets 12 furlongs as well as today's 1m 2f trip, so that's no hindrance either. It doesn't look the hottest of contests and Oisin Murphy has already gone home.
