Lucky 15

Just the one winner yesterday, advised 6/4 and returned at 9/4. Paying out at double the odds helps for our solitary scorer but lets try and do better on Thursday.

We say hello to summer racing on Newmarket's July course, so that will do beautifully in respect of providing our Lucky 15 tips. The action on Thursday June 27 starts at 14:20.

Today's Horse Races

14:20 - Praetorian @ 11/4

Few trainer/jockey combinations have the kind of glittering reputation for handling two-year-olds that Archie Watson and Hollie Doyle enjoy. They team up here with a Romanised colt out of a Galileo mare, the brilliantly-named Praetorian.

One run so far, 34 days ago - a £16k maiden at this 6f trip at Pontefract. That's a stiff, undulating track, and it will have been quite an educational experience.

Newmarket has it's own foibles, and after finishing a close-up third at Ponty behind one that's subsequently run well in a conditions contest at Beverley, I like the chances of Praetorian very much in this fascinating opener.

16:30 - Ararat @ 9/2

Hayley Turner now, on board a Dave Simcock conveyance in a 7f heat for older horses.

Ararat is a decent handicapper who hasn't been seen since comfortably winning a course-and-distance Class 4 in September last. He's up 8lb for that on seasonal reappearance, but connections probably could hardly wait to get back to HQ, though that particular win was achieved on the Rowley Mile.

He has run well too on the July course, winning on it earlier last summer, and evidently goes very well here. Dave trains locally and Ararat enjoys the home comforts I guess!

Four-year-old campaign starts in earnest here for this son of Kodiac, who also scored at Newmarket during his career - and it could be rewarding.

17:05 - Transitioning @ 7/2

Oisin Murphy rides for long-time connection Andrew Balding.

The three-year-old gelding Transitioning makes his handicap bow after two maiden/novice starts, the first of which he won nicely at Donny. Sixteen days ago he ran as if needing further at Wetherby over 7f (beaten 3.5l), and gets a mile today.

Doesn't look overburdened with 8st 13lb, and a mark of 78. His sire won the Group 2 Richmond at Goodwood and he's out of a Pivotal mare, so it's not a given that the trip will suit - but on Wetherby evidence it certainly looked that way to me.

17:40 - Churchella @ 4/1

Two-mile stayers now, and a four-year-old Churchill filly raiding from North Yorkshire.

Churchella is in the care of David O'Meara and will be ridden by Jason Watson, who knows her well. Eleven days ago she ran well at Thirsk over a lesser trip (1m 6f) and was doing her best work at the finish.

She drops from a Class 4 to a 5 this afternoon and she's proved she gets this marathon distance. It's visit number one to HQ, but let's hope the change of scenery works the oracle.

Horse Racing Odds

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £500 for your total £7.50 stake.

Fred, 'The Bonus King,' invented the 'Lucky' series of bets and their bonuses. My colleague Adam has set out all you need to know with this handy guide - take a look by clicking here.
