Lucky 15 tips with alan firkins

We're off to Southwell on Thursday, January 23 for our Lucky 15 tips. An interesting and competitive-looking eight-race card kicks in at 17:00. We were very nicely among the winners yesterday ay Kempton, so motor up to Nottinghamshire with plenty of optimism.

If you're playing, have a lovely afternoon. The Queen of Southwell Hayley Turner has just the one booked ride, a Charlie Johnston-trained filly looking to follow-up a win at Chelmsford 12 days ago. Interesting ...

Lucky 15 Tips - Thursday, January 23

  • 19:30 - Jumbeau @ 7/2
  • 20:00 - Em Four @ 4/1

Today's Horse Races

17:30 - Spirit Of Jura @ 4/1

The aforementioned Ms Turner teams up with the Johnston yard on a Derby winner's daughter.

Three-year-old filly by Epsom hero Masar, Spirit Of Jura, won narrowly last time under Hayley 12 days ago, at Chelmsford. That was in a novice heat over a mile, and she steps up to handicap company AND stretches out over 1m 3f this early evening.

Given that breeding detail the extra distance looks likely to suit and bar her debut run in soft ground at Redcar she's looked as if a trip was what was required.

It's Hayley's only mount and the combo have a very attractive-looking weight of 8st 12lb compared to likely favourite Manara (9st 7lb), who nevertheless rates a big danger after three handicap wins on the spin.

The assessor might just have her measure at this stage though, 24lbs higher now than for the first of those victories in mid-November.

18:30 - Portoro @ 2/1

A 7f handicap, for older horses (4+).

Portoro is trained by Martin Dunne in Newmarket, and ran well here 26 days ago to be third beaten 2l, over 6f. The five-year-old gelding has been campaigned over a number of distances including a mile-and-a-half, but after winning over 7f at Kempton the time before last, and running-on perfectly well here recently, this track/trip combination might be just what's required.

It's a modest little heat and we're siding at least with one in a little bit of form. Jockey Dylan Hogan gets on with him well, has ridden a couple of winners in the last few weeks, and it's once again the jockey's only booked mount on the card.

19:30 - Jumbeau @ 7/2

Speedsters now over the minimum 5f trip, and a nice little Class 3 contest it is.

Our selection Jumbeau hasn't run for 138 days but habitually runs very well fresh. The five-year-old mare is with Tom Clover at Newmarket, and Jack Doughty, who is no stranger to the horse, takes off a handy 3lb.

When last seen in September she ran a blinder at Haydock, getting to within a length of a decent Mick Appleby tool in a blanket finish for a £25k to the winner Class 2.

Off the same mark of 86 she can hopefully take this on a very rare foray away from the turf. She gets a little bit further perfectly well which can help here, where I always think stamina is certainly required (if not anything like as markedly as in the old Fibresand days).

20:00 - Em Four @ 4/1

Jamie Osborne sends just one from his Upper Lambourn base, a three-year-old Sixties Icon colt looking to back up a maiden win last time at Chelmsford.

Em Four makes his handicap bow in this fascinating 5f sprint, and after making all at Chelmsford last time over 6f a drop down to 5f here, if wanting to repeat those all-the-way tactics, isn't perhaps a bad move for the staying-power reasons alluded to above.

It's only career start number four but the horse showed bags of promise without having much luck in running on the other two racecourse appearances (Kempton and Wolverhampton) and Jamie might have a very nice, improving colt with which to have some fun.

Starts off a mark of 72 - time will tell if that's helpful or otherwise.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £390 for your total £7.50 stake.
