Lucky 15 generic

There’s a little something for everyone on Thursday, with five meetings taking place across Britain and Ireland.

Ireland’s sole fixture comes from Cork, which is swiftly followed by Jumps fixtures from Sedgefield, Chepstow and Ludlow, whilst Newcastle’s all-weather card takes us through the evening.

We've picked out four horses to follow across the day and they include a progressive sprinter for Bryan Smart who is bidding to complete a hat-trick.

Lucky 15 Tips - Thursday, March 20

  • 14:35 Sedgefield - Scorsese @ 15/8
  • 16:30 Ludlow - Kado De Joie @ 11/8
  • 17:45 Chepstow - Calvino @ 10/3
  • 19:00 Newcastle - Buzz Box @ 4/1

14:35 Sedgefield - Scorsese @ 15/8

SCORSESE remains a maiden over hurdles after nine starts but that could be set to change on Thursday. Finishing fourth over 2m7f at Exeter last time out, he weakened quickly in the final couple of furlongs and should be suited by the drop back in trip.

He did run well for a long way that day however and there were some positive signs that he should be getting off the mark sooner rather than later. Keenness was his downfall that day and the shorter trip should help on that front.

Neil Mulholland’s gelding contested some decent maiden hurdles when trained in Ireland and finished behind the likes of Firefox and King Of Kingsfield.

16:30 Ludlow - Kado De Joie @ 11/8

Nicky Henderson’s KADO DE JOIE is a three-time winner over hurdles and there’s every chance the five-year-old can make it four at Ludlow on Thursday.

He wasn’t beaten too far when fifth in a better race at Wincanton last time and the extra furlong is likely to suit on that evidence.

The son of Magneticjim travelled particularly well under Nico De Boinville last time and may well have got even closer with a better jump at the second last flight of hurdles.

James Bowen gave him plenty to do when winning at Lingfield in December but still managed to come out on top and the form of that race has been boosted since, with three subsequent winners coming out of the race.

You would imagine the handicapper will catch up with him soon, as he’s creeping up the weights, but Henderson’s runner can win again before that happens.

This is an Extra Place Race, meaning that Betfred will pay 3 Places (1/5 Odds) rather than 2.

17:45 Chepstow - Calvino @ 10/3

CALVINO made his debut in a Class 3 bumper at Ascot in November and he ran well for a long way but appeared to need the run, as he weakened in the final furlong. Physical improvement is therefore anticipated and this looks like an easier race.

There’s plenty to like about his pedigree, as his dam was a Listed-winning chaser for Nicholls and he’s by the hugely popular sire Walk In The Park. Connections went to €130,000 to get this gelding and they’ll be hoping he’s up to winning a race of this stature.

Nicholls has already had seven bumper winners so far this season and you wouldn’t want to rule out winner number eight here.

19:00 Newcastle - Buzz Box @ 4/1

Bryan Smart’s BUZZ BOX is a horse on the up and could be one to keep on side until his limitations are exposed. Winning each of his last two starts over course and distance, he should make a bold bid for the hat-trick, despite a 6lb rise for his latest success.

He’s a 5f specialist and there was lots to like about his performance last time out, especially the way he was pulling clear at the line. Smart’s four-year-old probably has more in hand than the 6lb he was put up and should be going close once again if so.

The step up to Class 2 company will require some improvement but he’s one of the least exposed runners in the field and his progressive profile catches the eye.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon our selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £95 for your total £7.50 stake.
