L15 Punchestown

The week hurtles by. We're already on Day Three of the Punchestown Festival, Thursday May 2, and what sensational racing we're lucky enough to be enjoying.

Once again our Lucky 15 tips come from this superb racetrack about 20-odd miles from Dublin, and a matter of minutes from another great racing centre, in Naas. We've an embarrassment of riches to choose from - so here goes.

Lucky 15 tips Thursday

Punchestown

  • 16:15 - Path D'oroux @ 17/2
  • 18:00 - Teahupoo @ 5/6
  • 18:35 - Lucky Lyreen @ 17/2
  • 19:40 - Port Joulain @ 13/8

16:15 - Path D'oroux @ 17/2

Blood Destiny has form that ties in with Tuesday's impressive scorer Spillane's Tower, but I'm looking for some value with Gavin Cromwell's Path D'oroux. The selection ran well at both Cheltenham and Aintree and gets 6lb from the Mullins hotpot.

The seven-year-old Coastal Path gelding is very consistent and would be a deserving winner. His trainer has had a cracking year and struck with Backtonormal yesterday. I'll be having a little e/w single on this one too (we're paying five places).

18:00 - Teahupoo @ 5/6

A lovely winner for us at the Cheltenham Festival, races sparingly, and was 3l adrift of Klassical Dream in this last year. I'd say he was in better form this time around, has matured further now aged seven, and it will be a surprise to your humble correspondent at the very least if he's not good enough on Thursday, given a decent passage.

Jack Kennedy, who did such a good job at HQ, again takes the mount for Gordon Elliott.

18:35 - Lucky Lyreen @ 17/2

Another Elliott/Kennedy conveyance, on a hat-trick, and he's won over course-and-distance. Only broke his maiden in February, then stepped up to take a good novice at Fairyhouse in March. That last effort was a big improvement in every regard, and he appears to be very much going the right way.

On what could be a fine afternoon for the stable he has a value chance in my book and is another I'll be backing e/w on his own (we're paying six places).

19:40 - Port Joulain @ 13/8

Another NH flat race (bumper), and another big chance for the WP Mullins juggernaut. This one's owned by the Riccis, and ridden by the trainer's son Patrick.

Two runs so far, and two wins - a PTP, then a Gowran bumper. In the latter contest he beat a De Bromhead inmate who'd also won a PTP, and it was daylight back to the third.

Bags of promise then, and those famous pink and green colours are well used to battling away at the business end of these prestigious festival heats.

If you're playing, good luck, have fun, and enjoy!

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £565 for your total £7.50 stake.
