Lucky 15 Tips: In-form Murphy has fine Kempton chances

Plenty of attractive racing on offer for Thursday, September 18. We're hurtling into autumn with unseemly haste but we've got outstanding sport to accompany us every step of the way. There's almost bound to be something that floats your boat - racing, top footie, NFL, World Championship Athletics, next week's Ryder Cup, the sharp-end of Super League; or a host of similarly fabulous, compelling, high-octane distractions. We love it every bit as much as you do.
For Thursday's Lucky 15 tips let's go all-weather racing on Kempton's Polytrack surface - never a bad idea, but especially appropriate with such biblical downpours potentially affecting the ground adversely at the turf courses. NINE races, and it all kicks in at 15:57.
Lucky 15 Tips - Thursday, September 18
Kempton
*Odds correct as of the time of publication
15:57 - Leone Alato @ 7/4
Two-year-olds go 7f in this intriguing novice stakes heat.
The boys in blue field Leone Alato, a St Mark's Basilica colt out of a Kingman mare. Two runs to date - close-up on debut at Newmarket in early August over this trip then an oddly tame effort at Newbury three weeks later, beaten miles over 6.5f in a maiden won by an 80/1 shot.
Hard to know what went wrong in Berkshire but any repeat of that HQ promise shown will surely see him challenging here. There's very little form to speak of and that initial outing is the standout piece among those that have had any racecourse experience.
Will Buick, who else, rides for Charlie Appleby.
18:12 - Allegresse @ 5/6
Small field, but a fascinating two-year-old novice over 1m.
Our fancy Allegresse is an Oasis Dream colt who's already been successful here - last time out, 30 days ago, on just his second racecourse appearance.
The Andrew Balding-trained juvenile won by over 9l in the hands of today's pilot Oisin Murphy at this trip, and in a very good time. He looks to hold the aces given his excellent Racing Post rating (105) and he'll surely be very hard to beat.
Made all last time so won't be a hostage to a falsely-run tactical affair, if necessary.
18:45 - Khafar @ 5/2
Two-year-old fillies now, in a 6f novice, and nice types from good yards are in opposition.
Little form on offer once again, with an unraced Buick/Appleby filly disputing favouritism and likely to go well (Valdorcia). However, I'm siding with the once-raced Shadwell youngster Khafar.
No doubt Jim Crowley would have been on board but he's recovering from that awful accident at York recently and we wish him and Trevor Whelan, also badly affected, the very best as they mend.
Stepping in for the ride is the excellent James Doyle, and Khafar ran second in a Newbury maiden on debut 21 days ago under Crowley, running on late in the piece. Contests at that track are invariably of a high standard, and that experience can be put to good use here this afternoon.
Charlie Hills trains, and the yard had a good winner yesterday at Sandown.
19:15 - St Mawes @ 5/2
Our selection in the 19:15 is presumably named after the glorious Cornish village across from Falmouth. What a wonderful part of the world - anyway, the equine St Mawes is a three-year-old gelded son of red-hot sire Wootton Bassett, and is trained in Wiltshire by Emma Lavelle.
No wins in five starts but this will be his second run since being gelded and after attracting Billy Loughnane up top the last day we now have irresistible force of nature and win-machine Oisin Murphy doing the steering.
The feeling persists that after five career starts and certainly hints of ability shown that in his third handicap off a new mark of 70, down from an opening 74, St Mawes could be about to step up.
No better man than Murph (38% strike-rate, currently) to finesse him home.
This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!
The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £107 for your total £7.50 stake.
