16:55 - Mandana @ 7/4

A two-year-old Persian King filly, in the care of Worcestershire trainers Dr Richard Newland & Jamie Insole.

Mandana has had four runs in maiden and novice company, remarkably returning the same Racing Post rating (71) on each occasion. She's therefore shown great consistency, and so nearly made it to the top step - but not quite.

She ran well on Polytrack at Chelmsford, and I've few concerns about her likely ability to handle Tapeta. She sets a decent standard for me and can win an ordinary-looking maiden in the hands of Hector Crouch, successful the other day at Ascot in a Listed heat.

18:30 - Trident @ 1/2

Could be on the skinny side but really does look like a winner (famous last words alert) waiting to happen.

This is a three-year-old No Nay Never gelding owned by Derrick Smith, Mrs John Magnier and Michael Tabor. Roger Varian trains, and it's jockey James Doyle's only booked mount on the card.

Interested yet? Trident has run just the once, 23 days ago in a Newcastle maiden, finishing a close-up second, running on. He'll know much more tonight and I'll be surprised/disappointed if he doesn't prevail cosily.

20:00 - Cool Party @ 4/1

A four-year-old course-and-distance scorer raiding from the Johnston yard on Middleham Moor.

Cool Party won here off 82 in April, then had a break before a modest showing at Ayr 19 days ago, well held in fourth. That course win was just about a career-best, and a repeat at the same trip/grade, admittedly off 3lb higher, could be on the cards.

He might just have needed that return run and having appreciated these circumstances before he might just be about to do so again. Jason Hart, who rode a double at the start of the month, is on top.

20:30 - Ancient Times @ 10/1

We alluded to this one in the introduction. A six-year-old Exceed And Excel gelding from the Harry Eustace stable, with the magnificent Hayley Turner holding the reins.

Ancient Times has won here before, always a bonus, and has slipped to a dangerous-looking mark of 71. He was rated as high as 93 in his pomp two years ago and I'd like to think Hayley feels it's worth sticking around for this old friend tonight.

Her only ride - and though it's one you'd expect her to take given the connections, I'm still encouraged. Smashing-looking price early doors, and I'll be having a little each-way dabble separately, too.

I'm playing the L15 each-way - I know there's a very skinny one in there, but let's look to hopefully benefit from the others, offering genuine value in my book.
