Lucky 15 generic

It’s a mixture of Flat and jumps racing in Britain and Ireland on Sunday, with three meetings to get stuck into.

The Flat action comes at Pontefract and on the all-weather at Southwell, while there is also afternoon jumping at Tramore. Below are my Lucky 15 Tips for Sunday’s fare.

Horse Racing Odds

13:22 Southwell - So Grateful @ 15/2

Recent form figures of 909 don’t make for great reading, but SO GRATEFUL can have all three of those starts excused, and much better is expected now returning to the all-weather.

The seven-year-old’s saddle slipped when disappointing at Redcar in May, and softer conditions can be blamed for the last two, but he beat a subsequent winner at Thirsk on the start before those disappointments and looks well treated off a 1lb lower mark.

He has also shown a liking for Southwell, with two wins and two seconds from five starts over course and distance since the surface switched from Fibresand to Tapeta, including a narrow defeat on his last visit in February.

This looks like a very weak race and, with Lewis Chalkley taking off a further 3lb and the promise of an easy time in front, he can notch a third win over the track and trip.

14:30 Tramore - Cosmos D’ainay @ 7/2

Dropping back in distance looks a good move for the Gordon Elliott-trained COSMOS D’AINAY, and he can land a first win over hurdles in the opener at Tramore.

A point-to-point winner, the five-year-old has easily the best bumper form in the field, having readily won by 14 lengths at Sligo in May.

However, he didn’t appear to stay two and a half miles in a Clonmel bumper the start before, and that again looked to be the case on his hurdling debut at Tipperary last month, when he weakened quickly on the approach to the last, having pressed the leader with three hurdles to go.

He’s missed four engagements since (twice due to ground), but he showed enough promise to think he could win races over hurdles and should prove a different proposition over this four-furlong shorter trip.

15:12 Pontefract - Saxonia @ 11/4

The stiff nature of Pontefract should suit SAXONIA, whose wins have been achieved at Newcastle and Newmarket, which are similar in terms of their testing finish.

He’s had a lot of racing for a three-year-old, but a lot of those races have come in a higher class, and his record at this level is solid, with form figures of 31242212 when racing in Class 5 company.

He was a well-supported favourite when dropped to this level at Wolverhampton last time, when he travelled well and hit the front before being hampered by the eventual winner inside the final furlong.

That was a fine effort, considering the sharp nature of that track likely didn’t play to his strengths, and he can go one better off the same mark, with first-time cheekpieces looking a good move.

16:42 Pontefract - Kentucky River @ 6/4

The longest race on the card at Pontefract is a Class 5 handicap over two miles and a furlong, and the extra emphasis on stamina should suit KENTUCKY RIVER.

The three-year-old son of Camelot has yet to win in seven starts, but his two best efforts have come on the occasions that he’s tackled a staying trip.

He ran better than the result suggests when sixth over a mile and six furlongs at Sandown in June, given he would have finished closer had he not received a bump approaching the final furlong, and then he chased home a subsequent impressive winner on his first go over two miles at Doncaster last time.

He pulled clear of the third that day, while shaping as though a more thorough test at the trip would suit, and can go one better off just a 2lb higher mark.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.25p each-way Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £440 for your total £7.50 stake.
