Lucky 15 Tips: Chester on a summer Saturday – yes please!

Fabulous Saturday fare as per, and in the ITV piece I've looked at the nine terrific contests from Newcastle, York and the Curragh that are available on terrestrial telly. So for our Lucky 15 tips let's visit historic Chester - the seven-race Roodee card kicks in at 14:00 and a superb afternoon's entertainment looks assured.

14:30 - Mr Winston @ 5/4

Three-year-old colt by Churchill (who else?), knocking loudly of late at the door of maiden success.

Mr Winston finished less than a length adrift in a similar affair 29 days ago at Haydock, and it was 5.5l back to the third. Andrew Balding trains and Jason Watson, in red-hot form right now (28% strike-rate in the last 14 days), takes the mount for the first time.

Looks like a winner waiting to happen, and the yard are invariably a force to be reckoned with here. Anywhere, for that matter.

15:35 - Ghaiyya @ 10/3

Charlie Johnston is another in fine form just now - the yard is operating at 28%, and a recent contributor to that success has been Ghaiyya.

The three-year-old filly took a Thirsk maiden 11 days ago and makes her handicap debut off 77 this afternoon. Decent draw in the three box if an all-the-way effort is planned (every chance, especially around here), and being quietly progressive she could well have more improvement to come.

No better jockey than Joe Fanning in terms of dictating from the front.

16:45 - Trojan Sun @ 8/1

A real Chester maestro jockey-wise in Richard Kingscote teams up here with another absolute gem, full stop - the quite brilliant Lanarkshire trainer Jim Goldie.

Trojan Sun is a five-year-old gelding with two career wins from 15 starts, and has developed quite a liking for this quirky circuit. No wins here (yet), but with the ground likely to be good or better he can leave previous efforts behind for Kingscote and perhaps register a first course success.

After a couple of recent Class 4 spins he's dropped down to a Class 5 today, and the assessor has reduced his mark by a pound, too. Nice racing weight of 8st 11lb - loads to like.

17:20 - Liberate @ 9/4

Miss Kirsten Rausing's famous silks now, and a three-year-old filly by a French Derby winner out of a Selkirk mare.

Liberate has had just three starts - showing progressive form, and winning last time by a neck in a Goodwood novice. Handicap debut-time then, off a mark of 82, and having mastered Goodwood and its many foibles Chester might not be quite the shock to the system some first-time visitors might experience.

The 10f+ trip should be fine and George Wood, on top today, rode her at Wolves on start number two (respectable fourth).

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!
