Lucky 15 tips with alan firkins

We're fabulously spoiled on Saturdays - but we're worth it. Fantastic racing is the order of the day, I've looked at the ITV selections in some depth in a companion piece, and for our Lucky 15 tips for November 23 I'm heading to Ascot, and the races that haven't come under that ITV microscope.

The action kicks in at 12:25 for a seven-race, high-quality National Hunt feast.

Lucky 15 Tips - Saturday, November 23

Ascot

  • 12:25 - Kloth Of Utopia @ 13/8
  • 12:55 - Scarlet O'Tara @ 3/1
  • 14:05 - Inis Oirr @ 9/2
  • 15:50 - Best Life @ 6/1

Today's Horse Races

12:25 - Kloth Of Utopia @ 13/8

Trained in France, and one of those super-precocious youngsters that seem way ahead of our UK juveniles in terms of maturity. Think Kauto Star back in the day. What connections wouldn't give to think this four-year-old gelding could be half as good even as the Nicholls legend.

Kloth Of Utopia is owned by JP McManus; and James Reveley, plying his trade across the Channel for a long time now, is in the plate. Could be very tasty, and be back with interest for that little gathering in the Cotswolds come March-time.

12:55 - Scarlet O'Tara @ 3/1

Love the name; and the daughter of Kayf Tara has an engine, too.

A couple of wins in eight starts to date, including last time off a mark of 108. Up 3lb but Scarlet O'Tara took that Perth contest readily and can go in again for Dr Richard Newland & Jamie Insole.

5lb claimer Luke Scott has the riding assignment, good ground suits, and last time was a career-best for the six-year-old mare. Let's hope she goes like the wind ...

14:05 - Inis Oirr @ 9/2

This one probably means 'don't back me at any cost' in Gaelic, but I'll risk it anyway.

Trainer Lucinda Russell raids from Perth and Kinross, and she's booked 5lb claimer Alan Doyle, who had a winner for the yard at Wetherby the other day.

Inis Oirr is a promising stayer who might just be in the grip of the handicapper right now - but a 2lb drop for this will help and I doubt they'd make the long journey south without a wee bit of confidence.

15:50 - Best Life @ 6/1

The lucky last, and a bit of a punt on a Nico de Boinville-ridden, Hemmings Racing-owned six-year-old gelding trained in Shropshire by Mel Rowley.

Love seeing those famous silks - Hedgehunter and company - and Best Life tackles his second handicap having run well in his first - beaten 8l into second, and raised by the naughty old assessor 4lb for that sterling effort. Scandalous, I tell you.

Nico is on board for the first time and I like the booking a lot. The horse's form has been quietly progressive and he's got a chance for me in what looks an open race.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £440 for your total £7.50 stake.
