Lucky 15 Tips: King’s Gambit to shine in York opener

Seven meetings take place across the UK and Ireland on Saturday, with a mixture of both Flat and jumps racing.
It is the final day of the Ebor Festival at York, while elsewhere we have Flat action at Goodwood, the Curragh, Newmarket, Windsor and Redcar. Jumps fans can get their fix of the action from Cartmel and Killarney. Below is my Lucky 15 selection for Saturday’s action.
Lucky 15 Tips - Saturday, August 23
- 13:20 Killarney - Wholelotofbusiness @ 9/4
- 13:50 York - King’s Gambit @ 3/1
- 14:40 Goodwood - Prince Of The Seas @ 6/5
- 17:35 Cartmel - Heaven Smart @ 9/1
*odds correct at time of publication
13:20 Killarney - Wholelotofbusiness @ 9/4
The opening maiden hurdle at Killarney looks a very good opportunity for WHOLELOTOFBUSINESS to register a first success for Eoin McCarthy.
He has booked the services of top jockey Jack Kennedy to ride, and although there isn’t a huge amount of form from all the runners, he has much the best effort in the book, and a replication of his most recent run and his previous run at the course should be good enough to win this.
13:50 York - King’s Gambit @ 3/1
Perhaps a little unlucky in the Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot KING’S GAMBIT can make amends for that here. He is less likely to find trouble in running with a field size of eight opposed to 16 last time.
With a slightly more positive ride he should be too good for the rest of the field. He is the best horse in the race, and his form at the course last year at a higher level shows his liking for the Knavesmire.
14:40 Goodwood - Prince Of The Seas @ 6/5
PRINCE OF THE SEAS has been a little disappointing this season but showed an improved and career-best effort when seen at Ascot most recently. Jack Dace is booked for the ride and claims a useful 5lb which can make a big difference, he is effectively running off a 4lb lower mark than when beaten just half a length last time.
He needs to prove that was no fluke, but provided he can continue on his current trajectory he can improve past others in the field and return to winning ways for the first time this season.
17:35 Cartmel - Heaven Smart @ 9/1
This handicap chase is a competitive affair on paper but it could be worth chancing HEAVEN SMART. When he was trained by Gary Moore he achieved an official rating of 115 as a novice chaser.
He has been largely disappointing of late, but as a result is running off a mark of 88 on his second start for his current stable, and if able to replicate close to the form he has shown previously, this is a mark the gelding should be able to win off.
Further to this he has had a wind operation since he was last seen on the course. Provided this has the desired effect, he can once more find himself in the winners’ enclosure.
This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!
The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.25p each-way Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £200.06 for your total £7.50 stake.
