Lucky 15 Tips: Tough to contain Marquand right now

Some absolute 24 carat top-drawer jocks are heading to Dunstall Park Wolverhampton on Saturday night, and I rather think we should join them for our Lucky 15 tips.

The seven-race card kicks in at 17:20 and a mere cursory glance reveals names like Tom Marquand, Hollie Doyle and Rossa Ryan. No need to look any further!

17:55 - Red Sand @ 4/1

The brilliant Tom Marquand, fresh from filling his boots at Newmarket this week, rides this three-year-old Too Darn Hot colt for Ed Walker and notable owner Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum.

Red Sand has had two spins so far, as a juvenile - a well-held second on debut in a Bath maiden, then a comfortable score in a Goodwood novice, in taking fashion.

Connections could be in line for a cracking season with this one and we'll know a lot more about that tonight. Trip is 7f - lovely race.

19:00 - Romantic Spirit @ 2/1

Tom time once again - for trainer David Menuisier on this occasion.

Romantic Spirit is a three-year-old filly who struck for the first time in five career starts last time on this course, 19 days ago. Clearly enjoys the West Midlands air, and must defy a 5lb hike tonight.

The way Mr Marquand is riding he's worth 5lb on his own almost, and it would be a surprise if there isn't some improvement to come in any event from what was her seasonal reappearance after all.

Same trip tonight, and as she's by an Irish Guineas winner all again should be well on that front (she was rather hanging on at the end, though) but there's plenty of speed on the dam's side too so there could be a touch of versatility.

20:00 - Radiant Angel @ 15/2

Trainer Joe Ponting is not a name I'm terribly familiar with in all truth, but I'm hoping the Gloucestershire handler has the answer to this with Radiant Angel.

The selection is a four-year-old gelding by flying machine Harry Angel, and lines up for this 6f sprint after a fine effort over course-and-distance 12 days ago, going down by just under a length.

That was off a mark of 57, and the naughty old assessor has put him up a pound for his trouble. He's extremely consistent though, and at this lowly basement handicap level (Class 6) that rare quality is gold dust material.

Formerly with George Boughey (moved in October 2024). Charles Bishop (only ride on the card) is on top.

20:30 - Royal Accord @ 11/10

Lucky last time, and we're with super-shrewd trainer Stuart Williams and his topweight Royal Accord.

Lovely bit of symmetry on show here. The three-year-old Aclaim gelding won last time out off 53, and tonight's bid to follow-up off 58 is to be aided (fingers crossed) by Warren Fentiman, who claims - you've guessed it - 5lbs.

So - if we're happy with Warren's credentials (we are) though he's not an accomplished pro as such he's a fine rider getting an allowance for that inevitable lack of experience - helping to negate the hike.

He joined Stuart (the horse) from Alice Haynes in January and has been quietly progressive, albeit once again in the lower rungs of our sport. Any repeat of last time's success (just nine days ago) would see him bang there, and improvement is by no means ruled out, on just his fifth run for new connections.
