Lucky 15

Welcome to a new week in the world of sport. Jumps action today from Taunton, and all-weather Tapeta racing from Newcastle.

Winners and e/w advices to report from both Friday and the ITV live racing piece on Saturday, which is most gratifying. Friday's L15 - one winner, two seconds, and a third. So close to a meaningful strike!

I'm off to the north-east today, where Billy Loughnane has a couple of interesting booked rides on the eight-race card. It's sure to be competitive, and fun.

This is an example of how to put together a Lucky 15 - if you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £496 for your total £7.50 stake.

Popular legend confirms that Fred, 'The Bonus King,' invented the 'Lucky' series of bets and their bonuses. Want the lowdown - all the ins and outs? My colleague Adam has set out all you need to know with this handy guide - take a look by clicking here.

Lucky 15 tips, Monday

  • 15.55 - Greenwich @ 9/4
  • 16.30 - Mattella @ 2/1
  • 17.00 - Struck Gold @ 4/1
  • 19.00 - Zuffolo @ 7/1

15.55 - Greenwich @ 9/4

A gelded 4-yr-old son of Prix Morny and Norfolk hero No Nay Never, and in the care of Rebecca Menzies.

Billy Loughnane is on board for the Horse Watchers 10, and after just three career starts he makes his handicap debut. Last time at Redcar he showed signs of greenness but finished well to be a close second.

Well-backed that day he's evidently thought capable, and stepping up from 6f on that occasion to 7f today should be very firmly in his favour. Regular readers will know of my admiration for Loughnane, and I can't think of anyone since the emerging Oisin Murphy who have made such an impact in the game.

He's already outstanding, and there's doubtless so much more to come.

16.30 - Mattella @ 2/1

The potent combo of Tim Easterby and David Allan combine with a 5-yr-old mare who's run just twice.

Ran well here on debut in November at a massive 40/1, going down by just a nose, but couldn't go one better after that the following month at Southwell. That initial run was over 6f, and the subsequent one only 5f. She's back up in trip today and can kick-start her career, belatedly, with a win, fingers crossed.

17.00 - Struck Gold @ 4/1

Another No Nay Never offspring, and another 4-yr-old gelding.

Hit a little purple patch in November with two wins, off 47 and 53, before being held last time over course-and-distance off 54. Same mark today, but I feel this is a less-deep contest and he pops back into Class 6 company after contesting a Class 5 on that last occasion. Has thrived since being stepped up to a mile - today's trip.

This is a career-high mark but it's fair to say he's producing some of his very best form of late. Adam Farragher was up top for the last race and will subsequently know more about the horse and any quirks this afternoon.

19.00 - Zuffolo @ 7/1

The lucky last, and Cliff Lee aboard a Michael Dods sprinter.

He ran well here twice in November before an ordinary effort 31 days ago. However, he was bumped at the start that day and ran freely before fading. He's won off 70 and 71, so today's mark of 72 should be well within compass.

Ultra-shrewd trainer, very good jockey. Good value in my book; I'll be having an each-way single too, especially as we're paying FOUR places.
