Lucky 15 Tips: Council could prove superior at Ayr

At the start of a busy week featuring the July Festival at Newmarket, we've got four meetings to enjoy across the UK & Ireland.

I've picked out four fancies from across the cards to form my Lucky 15 tips.

15:15 Worcester - Betty's Tiara @ 2/1

Bumper winner BETTY’S TIARA remains a maiden after nine starts over hurdles but this looks like a good opportunity to rectify that. 

Ben Pauling’s mare was a little unlucky when finishing second at Southwell last time out and she can go one better if producing a similar performance. It’s also worth noting that she was well clear of the third that day and she won’t need to improve much on that form.

Two of Pauling’s five runners in the last fortnight have won, giving him a 40 per cent strike-rate, and jockey Ben Jones’ 33 per cent strike-rate also catches the eye.

16:05 Ayr - Superior Council @ 4/1

Iain Jardine’s SUPERIOR COUNCIL was an 18-race maiden before getting off the mark at Hamilton on his penultimate start. It was a much improved performance that day and the first time blinkers made a big difference.

He made all the running and pulled clear to score by two lengths, despite running from 1lb out of the handicap. It’s hard to argue with a 4lb rise and he was outstayed when second here last time out and will appreciate the return to 6f.

16:55 Worcester - Janworth @ 6/5

Jamie Snowden runs the lightly raced and progressive JANWORTH in this race and the eight-year-old has really turned a corner this season, winning both of her completed starts.

She made a successful return after a 334-day absence to win an average race at Sedgefield in May, for which she was put up 6lb. Unfortunate to fall at the last when will in control at Southwell next time, she was the moral winner that day.

Snowden’s mare scooted clear to score by eight lengths when winning over course and distance last time out and the handicapper has responded with an 8lb rise. Clearly she’s one to keep on side for the time being and victory could be on the cards once again.

20:00 Ripon - Dothan @ 7/2

Edward Bethell is a trainer to follow and his lightly raced three-year-old should be capable of winning more races. DOTHAN made the perfect start to life in handicaps by winning off a 1lb lower mark at Doncaster on seasonal debut.

It’s a small concern that he has failed to make the frame in two subsequent starts but this race is potentially a little easier than his last task at York and a 1lb drop in the weights won’t hurt his chances.
