Lucky 15 Tips: Can’t resist the Queen of Southwell

Plenty of attractive racing on Friday, February 7 - with fingers firmly crossed that the weather doesn't play a negative part in proceedings over the coming days.

For our Lucky 15 tips we're heading to Southwell's nine-race all-weather card on the Tapeta, with Rossa Ryan looking to have several decent chances among his six scheduled riding assignments.

17:45 - Stanley Spencer @ 11/8

Decent Class 4 handicap over 6f; and a course-and-distance winner is our hopeful selection.

Stanley Spencer is a four-year-old Iffraaj gelding with three career victories from 11 starts so far. Last time out in mid-December he was second of 12 in a Kempton contest over a furlong less (7f), running on at the finish.

Seems a little surprising then, this step back in trip, but most of his races have been over the sprint distance and Southwell's nature means, in my view at least, that 6f here is decidedly tougher than at most other venues.

His last win was at Kempton in October (a couple of runs ago), achieved off a mark of 76. He's up to 82 today, but has improved leaps and bounds since being rated just 71 in June.

Neil Callan, who knows him well, takes the mount; and though he's got plenty on he could well continue on this impressive upward curve.

18:15 - Humam @ 7/4

The saintly Hayley Turner rides - her only booking of the evening.

Trainer Andrew Balding's three-year-old Kodiac colt broke his duck under Jason Watson at Lingfield 20 days ago, his third spin all told. Humam is a very promising type, races in the Al Shaqab colours, and makes his handicap debut tonight.

Here's another who drops down from 7f to 6f, but again a Southwell six is equivalent to a tad further at most tracks. An unbeaten Karl Burke-trained rival and the likely favourite Rebel's Gamble looks to be his main danger, but concedes just over a stone to the Balding conveyance.

That's an awful lot of weight, and he'll have to be pretty smart to pull it off - and of course he might well be, but I'm betting that he's not.

Fabulous little heat - only five face the starter, but what an absolute cracker.

18:45 - Neptune Legend @ 7/4

Another 6f sprint - this time a classified stakes race.

My selection Neptune Legend comes out pretty favourably on official figures - every horse here is carrying 9st 9lb, but his mark of 50 is matched only by one rival, with the rest of the field considered inferior ability-wise by between three and eight pounds.

Tony Carroll trains, and the brilliant Rossa Ryan is in the plate. 'Legend' gets further than this six, and for reasons extensively promoted above that's no bad thing here.

The horse was in career-best territory last time, albeit at this very modest level, and has placed on the last three occasions, all pretty recently. Hollie Doyle was on top the last twice, and now he gets Rossa.

Encouragingly ambitious, optimistic jockey engagements that confirm the six-year-old Invincible Spirit gelding is seen as no back number; something he can confirm indisputably this evening in Nottinghamshire.

20:15 - Boujee Gold @ 9/4

A modest one mile handicap test, second division of same, and I'm hoping Rossa's got a little bit more magic left for the lucky last.

The experienced six-year-old mare Boujee Gold is trained by Tony Carroll in Worcestershire, and two starts ago won a similar affair at Wolves at a big price, off a mark of 48.

She gets Ryan up top for the first time, and ran perfectly well at the same track looking to defy a 4lb hike a few weeks later (January 7). The assessor has popped her up a further pound for that very fine effort but she's evidently in great nick and has run with credit here before. Decent chance in what's admittedly a competitive-looking handicap.

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £100 for your total £7.50 stake.
