Lucky 15

Nice winner yesterday (advised 5/2, returned 4/1), but nothing to back it up. There's jumps racing today from Musselburgh and Ludlow - while for sand-lovers like yours truly, we've got Tapeta action from Southwell and Wolverhampton.

With Rossa Ryan and Billy Loughnane riding at Dunstall Park, it's a no-brainer - Wolves it is!

This is an example of how to put together a Lucky 15 - if you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £562 for your total £7.50 stake.

Popular legend confirms that Fred, 'The Bonus King,' invented the 'Lucky' series of bets and their bonuses. Want the lowdown - all the ins and outs? My colleague Adam has set out all you need to know with this handy guide - take a look by clicking here.

Lucky 15 tips, Friday

Wolverhampton

  • 18.30 - Black Smoke @ 5/1
  • 19.30 - Basholo @ 4/1
  • 20.00 - Circles @ 3/1
  • 20.30 - Camacho Star @ 3/1

18.30 - Black Smoke @ 5/1

Black Smoke and Footsy met here over 2f shorter 18 days ago. They re-oppose tonight, and though they weren't on board last time, it's now a battle royal of the all-weather heavyweights - Ryan vs Loughnane.

Footsy, and Rossa, are up 2lb for beating Black Smoke just under 2l. Billy, now riding the 7-yr-old gelding trained by his father Mark, looks to turn the tables. I believe there's optimism to think he can do just that.

Black Smoke is yet to win for Loughnane Snr but did score off a mark of 55 for previous handler Brian Barr, at Lingfield in August. He promptly transferred and though running with credit, especially last time, he's yet to strike again. He races off 54 today.

Billy can finesse this one home, and as he was running on with purpose at 1m 4f, he should appreciate the extra 440 yards or so. 'The Kid' fires in doubles, trebles, you name it - what an addition he's been, and still so young.

19.30 - Basholo @ 4/1

A useful performer in this grade, and ridden by a claimer who's having winners; Alex Jary.

Stella Barclay trains, and she had success here 3 days ago. Basholo didn't get competitive here last time but blew the start. The mare was beaten only 4l at the line and if handling the one-box draw she can navigate a path down the inside, and strike late.

Gets 6f but looks more effective to me at the minimum. Needs to get that start right.

20.00 - Circles @ 3/1

Irish raider, 5-yr-old mare, for whom the booking of Billy The Kid looks very significant.

Bit of a Dundalk specialist over between 6f and a mile - gets 7f here, so no worries on that score. Loughnane in the plate is a massive plus, and he'll need to be at his brilliant best to overcome a modest draw (10).

The mare looks nicely weighted with 8st 13lb and with Billy's magic touch can go very close. Has undoubted ability, and being by Holy Roman Emperor out of a Galileo mare she'd be one of the best-bred on the card.

20.30 - Camacho Star @ 3/1

A 4-yr-old gelding representing the outstanding Yorkshire handler Kevin Ryan, and ridden by Tom Eaves. Had a wind op in October, and has had two spins at Southwell since - a win and a narrowly-beaten second.

On the evidence of those runs he looks better over 7f, today's trip, and he steps up a grade today with evident stable confidence that he can remain competitive. Doesn't look overburdened with 9st and his powerful yard certainly know the time of day.
