Lucky 15

Moral victories don't butter any parsnips, or something like that, but all four of yesterday's selections at Southwell were placed - including one in the lucky last which was returned at 16/1 ! Each-way was obviously where I should have been looking, but hindsight's a wonderful thing. Encouraging to be on the premises, so to speak.

Racing on Friday 26th Jan comes from Sandown and Sedgefield (NH), while there's all-weather flat action taking place at Lingfield, Dundalk and Wolverhampton.

Just love a Wolves evening affair under the lights, so it's to Dunstall Park we go for today's Lucky 15.

This is an example of how to put together a Lucky 15 - if you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £545 for your total £7.50 stake.

Popular legend confirms that Fred, 'The Bonus King,' invented the 'Lucky' series of bets and their bonuses. Want the lowdown - all the ins and outs? My colleague Adam has set out all you need to know with this handy guide - take a look by clicking here.

Lucky 15 tips Friday

Wolverhampton

  • 17.15 - Win Win Power @ 5/2
  • 17.45 - Photon @ 5/1
  • 18.15 - Intervention @ 3/1
  • 19.45 - Alafdhal @ 9/2

17.15 - Win Win Power @ 5/2

The prolific Rossa Ryan has four good chances tonight and this is the first of them.

An experienced Mick Appleby-trained gelding who came very close over slightly further at this track just 6 days ago. The step down to 7f isn't an obvious move to me at least but they could be anxious to strike while the iron is hot, and Rossa is very familiar with the horse.

He won on him off a mark of 64 in Dec at 8.5f, and is only on 65 tonight. As long as Ryan can work out a trip from the one box I'm very hopeful.

17.45 - Photon @ 5/1

4-yr-old, trained by Roger Teal and ridden by Aidan Keeley.

This one was gelded in October and found a new level of form on his one subsequent start, in early Jan. At around this trip/grade he finished an excellent second at Lingfield under Billy Loughnane, whose booking alone is proof positive that connections have faith and hope in the horse.

It might just be time that this lightly-raced entry started his career in earnest. Lingfield was hugely encouraging.

18.15 - Intervention @ 3/1

A Mick Appleby/Ali Rawlinson raider, racing in the familiar syndicate colours of the Horse Watchers.

Intervention has been in exceptional form since November, hurtling up the handicap accordingly. He won a Class 5 off 75 in November - today it's Class 3 company, off a career-high mark of 91. He's earned it, and is very effective here, including a Class 2 score on Boxing Day.

Versatile trip-wise from the minimum to a mile, it's 6f today and in such a relatively small field there shouldn't be any hard-luck stories.

19.45 - Alafdhal @ 9/2

Another Rossa Ryan express, in a 6f sprint.

Alafdhal is knocking on the door and slipping down the handicap - his turn looks close to me. Trainer Phil McEntee is once again in charge of the much-travelled 6-yr-old gelding and he won off 72 here 12 months ago. The mark is just 59 today, and in evidently very decent nick he gets Ryan for the first time and that, for me, can make the difference.
