Friday Lucky 15 Tips: Chester City Streak for Murphy?

Friday - the final day of the fabled Chester Cup May festival, and time for the aforementioned centrepiece race. We've also got a Group 2 and some fascinating supporting contests. A bumper eight-race card in Cheshire runs from 13:30 - 17:23.

Our Lucky 15 tips for Friday come once again then from the Roodee, and with fair weather and decent ground prevailing this week, it's been a delight. On to York next week, and I'll have the inestimable pleasure of being on the Knavesmire on Thursday to see Derby hopefuls line up in the Dante. Said it before, and I'll say it again - what a time in the sporting calendar this truly is.

14:05 - Mr Hampstead @ 2/1

Three-year-old maidens go 1m 4f+, and there's a likely hotpot in the shape of Aidan O'Brien's Galileo colt Ephesus.

My gaze however is focused upon Mr Hampstead, ironically another Galileo offspring housed at Roger Varian's in Newmarket. This is an Amo Racing individual, ridden by David Egan who is retained by the owner.

The selection has run just twice - a last backend Newcastle maiden, and on reappearance this term a Newbury novice stakes contest. He's shown a pleasing level of form, staying 10f perfectly well and highly likely given his breeding to appreciate the extra couple of furlongs.

He's entered in the Betfred Derby, the Ascot 'Derby' and the Irish equivalent, so he's evidently well regarded by connections. Huge chance in my book.

14:35 - City Streak @ 7/2

Oisin Murphy rides this five-year-old Cityscape gelding, and the combination have struck here previously. Familiarity with this unique course and indeed previous success on the circuit is a big advantage.

City Streak gets a shade further than this 10.5f, and though a career-high mark of 91 must be defied the horse has a very consistent record. Drawn in the one box is another plus, and this is a standout handicap to savour. Fingers crossed then.

15:05 - Royal Rhyme @ 11/2

Another 10.5f test, this time a Group 2 for four-year-olds and up.

Royal Rhyme represents in-form Karl Burke and one of his familiar patrons Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum. The Lope De Vega colt ran well behind King Of Steel at Ascot in the Champion Stakes last autumn, and reappears for the season here as a four-year-old.

He's entered up in Group 1's at both the Curragh and Royal Ascot, and this could be a big year. Though fairly lightly-raced, he's won four of his eight career starts and with the stable having winners there's every chance that he'll be straight enough to be ultra-competitive.

Cracking heat, and some big yards oppose.

17:23 - Giselles Defence @ 15/8

The lucky last, and the closing race of the festival.

Apprentices take centre stage, and our selection Giselles Defence is trained by Ian Williams - having recently acquired the horse from Gavin Cromwell in Ireland.

The two spins so far for new connections have been excellent. A narrow reverse at Nottingham was followed by a resounding success at Pontefract, going clear by 4l on soft ground.

A livelier surface today, a step up in grade, and a 5lb penalty all enter calculations, but Williams plus the refreshing element of new surroundings seem to be unlocking some improvement in the four-year-old gelding.

Jockey Harry Burns had a winner the other day ay Ayr, and will fancy his chances of notching another on Friday.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!
