Lucky 15 tips with alan firkins (2)

There's a terrific spread of racing for our enjoyment on Friday, both in the UK and over in Ireland. Day 4 of the Glorious Goodwood Festival is irresistible however in terms of our Lucky 15 tips, as we've been involved having winners all week (two again yesterday), and enjoying the drama immensely.

We've still got Saturday up our sleeve but here's our penultimate offering from the Downs - action kicks in at 13:20, there are seven races, and the first five are live on ITV.

There's a decidedly each-way feel about the prices we're taking this afternoon so that's exactly how I'm playing the L15 today.

15:05 - Big Mojo @ 11/2

Tom Marquand resumes his partnership here with trainer Mick Appleby's talented three-year-old Mohaather colt; a cracking winner of the Molecomb over course-and-distance at this meeting last season.

Big Mojo is presently in great heart, going down by just a neck 20 days ago at Newmarket at 6f in the Group 1 July Cup, and I guess in an ideal world he might prefer a little further today.

However; the rain may well have slowed the ground somewhat and having the finishing resolve of a 6f animal at the minimum this afternoon on a potentially slow-ish surface isn't the worst of situations by a long way.

HQ was a career-best and I want to keep on the right side of this speedster, who just might be played very late and to devastating effect. (E/W 4 places)

15:45 - Godwinson @ 5/1

Wide-open Conditions heat over 9f; and we're hoping Tom Marquand is once again at his magnificent best.

The name Godwinson has me feeling all sorts of Battle of Hastings vibes, but this equine version is a five-year-old gelding by Saxon Warrior (who else?), in the care of red-hot Newmarket maestro William Haggas.

Godwinson is seeking a hat-trick and finds himself perched on a lofty mark (104), after wins at Donny and Newcastle off 94 and 99. That last performance was a significant career-high, emphasising the magnificent form the yard is in right now (31% strike-rate over the past 14 days).

He's four-from-11 so far, fairly lightly-raced with some chunky gaps between races, but undoubtedly in great order right now. He's won at this niche trip before and indeed on this very track, last August.

Lots going for him then, and a tremendous chance in my book. (E/W 3 places)

16:20 - Shaman Champion @ 4/1

The irrepressible Oisin Murphy now, riding for July Cup-winning trainer Richard Hughes.

Shaman Champion is a two-year-old colt by Shaman out of a Dark Angel mare so he's certainly bred to be a top juvenile. On the evidence of his latest spin at Newbury 22 days ago today's 6f will be no issue in this nursery handicap, as he made eye-catching late progress under Hong Kong-bound Dave Probert.

His two previous runs were at the minimum distance, and he won on debut emphatically in a Leicester maiden. Represents a bit of value in my book and there looks to be a fair bit more to come.

Very positive jockey booking, and no surprise if we see these famous Jaber Abdullah colours finishing with purpose to take a hand at the business end of proceedings. (E/W 4 places)

16:55 - Mdawi @ 13/2

Middle-distance Class 3 handicap - another with a competitive look and some big battalions in opposition.

Team Johnston rarely leave this meeting empty-handed and Charlie has two in this - one of whom is his three-year-old Wootton Bassett colt Mdawi.

Decent effort here over a furlong less on Wednesday, staying on to finish second at 22/1 beaten just 1.75l. This looks slightly easier, class-dropping one rung, and he's running off the same mark of 79.

Last time was an outstanding career-high, and having had only six starts to date there's every chance of further improvement to come. Any repeat or even better would see him bang in the thick of this one. (E/W 4 places)

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.25p each-way Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £690 for your total £7.50 stake.
