Betfred Horse Racing Ambassador Frankie Foster is back in situ with the St Leger Festival at Doncaster firmly on his radar. He’s sent us through his tips for four races today and a 50p each-way Lucky 15 bet (total stake £15) would pay out £1,348.50 as of the time of writing should it be a winner…

Lucky 15 Tips – Doncaster St Leger Festival Day 1, 2023

  • Back Johannes Brahms in the 14:25 @ 2/1
  • Back Hard to Resist in the 15:00 @ 13/2
  • Back Boogie Woogie in the 15:35 @ 7/1
  • Back If Not Now in the 16:10 @ 13/2

14:25

This is likely to be a battle between the top two in the market. Dragon Leader looked very good last time out, but I question how good the rest of the field was and maybe he was made to look slightly better than he is. Johannes Brahms has better form, finishing 2nd in the Windsor Castle behind Big Evs who won a Group 3 NTO at Goodwood, and more recently finishing second in the group 2 Gimcrack at York. Those two performances are good enough for me, I am siding with Johannes Brahms in this.

15:00

This is very competitive and the most unknown in here is Sea The Fire for the Balding team. The market is influencing my selection here as I believe Hard to Resist is overpriced, certainly in relation to the favourite. Hard to Resist had absolutely no luck in running LTO when finishing 3rd behind today’s favourite, yet still finished strongly. That was on soft ground, she has won previously on soft, and I think the extra furlong will help today too.

15:35

Although Boogie Woogie was disappointing last time out her season has been pretty solid until that point. She has a 2nd to the Betfred Oaks runner up Savethelastdance, was 1.5 lengths off the winner in a group 1, and has been placed in a Group 3. She will handle the soft ground, the question remains over the further trip but at an each way price I am willing to take that chance.

16:10

If Not Now has top weight to deal with here but I give him every chance to be better than this field and hopefully on to race beyond handicaps in Britain. He won very nicely at Sandown over C&D and didn’t put in a bad effort in the German Derby. Back to 10 furlongs in lesser company puts him well in the mix.
