Lingfield Park Tips: Irish raider to claim Listed prize

There is plenty happening on the racing front on Wednesday, with five meetings taking place across Britain and Ireland, and everyone’s tastes are catered for.

Among the action is a nine-race card from Lingfield (11:35 - 15:50) which provides a rare midweek treat of Listed action on the all-weather. We’ve selected our Lingfield tips in the best races on the card and they include a Ger Lyons-trained Irish raider in one of the two Listed contests.

13:37 – Bobby Bennu @ 7/4

Roger Varian’s lightly raced handicapper BOBBY BENNU could be the one to side with in this competitive 0-95 over 7f. The son of Phoenix Of Spain has made only six starts and just three of those have come in handicap company, so there could be some improvement to come.

Second over this trip at Southwell last season, he had no chance against the easy winner but stuck to his task well to claim second. The handicapper has decided to leave his mark alone and that could bode well for his chances here.

It didn’t take Bobby Bennu long to get off the mark and he did so at the second time of asking at Chester in June. He could hardly have been more impressive on the day and scooted clear with ease to score by seven lengths.

That form has since been boosted by the third who has won subsequently and he was almost 10 lengths adrift of Varian’s gelding. This horse is still finding his feet in handicaps and the best is yet to come.

14:07 – Madam Celeste @ 11/4

Lingfield’s first Listed contest of the day is the River Eden EBF Fillies' Stakes and the 1m5f race looks very open. It’s not often that Ger Lyons sends runners over to Britain and he aims MADAM CELESTE at the prize.

Lyons is a shrewd operator and the fact that Colin Keane also heads over for the ride could be a tip in itself. Madam Celeste has shown some fair form in Group and Listed company this term and was only just denied by a stablemate when finishing second in the Listed Diamond Stakes at Dundalk in September.

Having gained on the winner with every stride, this new trip is certainly worth a try on that evidence. It would be too early to write her off as a non-stayer based on her very below-par effort in the Irish Oaks as that performance isn’t an accurate reflection of her ability.

Her sole success came on polytrack at Dundalk last November and her most recent effort suggests she’s more than capable of running another big race on an artificial surface.

14:40 – Ornellaia @ 9/2

The final Listed contest of the day is the Fleur De Lys EBF Fillies' Stakes over a mile and Ralph Beckett’s runner ORNELLAIA gets the nod from us. This 101-rated filly showed some solid form as a two-year-old for Dominic Ffrench Davis but never made it to the track in a short stint with Roger Varian.

She looked desperately in need of the run when making her debut for the yard in a Listed race at Ascot last month and is entitled to improve significantly for it, as that was her first start for 391 days.

She kept on well to join the excellent filly Porta Fortuna on the line to finish third in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes last year and a performance anywhere near that level should put her bang in the mix.

This is an Extra Place Race, with 4 places on offer instead of 3 at 1/5 the odds for all each-way bets.
