Rachael Blackmore isn’t the only female looking for Grand National glory, as the winner of the Mares’ Chase at Cheltenham is looking to back up that impressive victory with one that would be historic. You have to go all the way back to 1951 and Nickel Coin to find the last mare who won the race.

Limerick Lace is a very tidy jumper who has shown good speed throughout her career. She has won three of her four races so far this campaign, culminating in that win at the Festival. Her only defeat came to fellow Grand National each-way shot Coko Beach, who took her down in the Grade 3 Troytown over at Navan back in November.

The one massive question mark against her is whether she has the stamina to go the extra distance. The Mares’ Chase victory came at half a furlong more than two-and-a-half miles and the Grand National goes four plus. She has never gone further than three miles in a race, so that is a big step-up in distance and one that might be tough to overcome.

There is no doubt that this is one of the classiest female horses we’ve seen in recent years and one that can take it to the boys. Over in the States in 2020, Swiss Skydiver took on the boys to win the Preakness Stakes, so there is recent precedent of this happening in big races. My biggest concern, however, is the extra distance, as that is adding an awful lot on in one go. If she has the legs, you never know.
