Leicester stages its penultimate flat racing fixture of the season on Tuesday afternoon, with the National Hunt season waiting in the wings.
There’s a seven-race card from the Oadby venue, with testing underfoot conditions expected.
14:15 – Wintercrack @ 5/1
Wintercrack has won only one of her eight career starts, but that victory came over today’s course and distance and the three-year-old looks excellent value to claim the spoils in the Apprentice Training Series Handicap at 14:15.
Pam Sly’s charge ran with some promise at Yarmouth last time out, but she was dropped two pounds for that midfield finish and a mark of 70 looks workable for the daughter of Cracksman.
Wintercrack certainly appeared a filly with promise when breaking her maiden on soft ground over course and distance in April, and the more testing the conditions, the better chance the three-year-old has.
Talented apprentice Mia Nicholls takes the ride and Wintercrack looks set for a big run.
16:00 – Ensign Wilson @ 33/1
Ensign Wilson has been sent off a odds of 200/1, 250/1, 200/1 and 150/1 on his last four starts, and while Mark Usher’s runner may be a fair bit shorter in the one-mile nursery at 16:00 this afternoon, the two-year-old looks a big-priced each-way play.
The son of U S Navy Flag kept on over six furlongs in a competitive 18-runner nursery at this track seven days ago, and that was a major step forward for Usher’s charge.
Ensign Wilson should be well-suited by the step up in trip and this looks a far weaker race than last week’s contest.
17:10 – Hodler @ 4/1
Hodler scored off a mark of 84 on soft ground at Chester earlier this year and the four-year-old is one point lower than that rating in the Class 3 handicap over seven furlongs at 17:10.
Jim Boyle’s charge was well fancied at Chester last time out, but the son of Sea The Moon missed the break before being rushed up and fading inside the final furlong.
That run was probably a little better than it appeared and the four-year-old was dropped two pounds for that run last month.
Today’s trip of seven furlongs on soft ground appears the ideal conditions for Hodler and this contest doesn’t look to over face Boyle’s charge.
