Kelso scaled

Tuesday brings with it lots more racing action, with Flat cards from Epsom, Thirsk and Yarmouth being joined by the jumps action at Hereford and Kelso.

The Scottish borders venue has a six-race offering from 14:30-17:20 and conditions underfoot are expected to be 'good'. My Kelso tips for Tuesday can be found below.

Kelso Tips - Tuesday, April 22

  • 15:05 – Winds Of Winter @ 3/1
  • 16:12 – Fingal's Hill @ 3/1
  • 17:20 – Chanonry Point @ 11/8

15:05 – Winds Of Winter @ 3/1

The second race on the Kelso card is the Mares' Novices' Limited Handicap Hurdle and it looks a wide open affair.

Recent point-to-point winners Park Hind and Our Girl Sal have more on their plates, while Tread Softly Now and WINDS OF WINTER lock horns again after finishing first and second over 2m2f here 15 days ago.

The winner got up after the last and was a half-length to the good passing the post. The runner-up is 9lb better off on these revised terms and Iain Jardine's Mahler mare can turn it around back up in trip.

She has proved most consistent since arriving from Ireland and stays this extra yardage no problem.

This is an Extra Place Race, meaning that Betfred will be paying 4 Places (1/5 Odds) instead of 3. T&Cs Apply.

16:12 – Fingal's Hill @ 3/1

There was plenty of market support for FINGAL'S HILL before he scored at Newcastle three weeks ago. The nine-year-old was up on the front end throughout under Brian Hughes in that contest and they had plenty in hand when coming home five-lengths clear of the field.

That was off a mark of 118 and Fingal's Hill is 5lb higher now. He has won off this rating before.

He is a six-time winner over hurdles and it's worth recalling that three of those wins arrived in quick succession in the spring of 2023 from mid-March to early May.

He was seemingly expected to go well last time and delivered, so it's worth sticking with him to remain in good form.

17:20 – Chanonry Point @ 11/8

Lucinda Russell can take the closing bumper with CHANONRY POINT after mare impressed against her own sex on Rules bow at Musselburgh last month.

The once-raced point-to-point winner was sent off favourite for that first outing and travelled well in mid-division before being asked to close on the leaders from around half a mile out.

She did that in smooth fashion and was in front with two-furlongs left to run, establishing more than four-lengths in hand on her main market rival in what was a clear cut win under Alan Doyle.

He rides again here, claiming a handy 3lb as he helps offset the penalty for that win. They take on a mixed field, with Jimmy Hurdstrom the likeliest danger based on his Wetherby second at the end of March.

The newcomers Am I Beloved and Borders Eagle don't make major appeal on paper, but the Nicky Richards-trained Abbey Scope is one to monitor closely. He'll need to be above average to lower the colours of this promising mare for a trainer with a 31 per-cent strike-rate at Kelso so far in 2025 with nine winners and six placed runners from just 29 runners.
