Itv racing tips with alan firkins

What an Easter treat - ELEVEN live races on ITV embracing All-Weather Championships Day from Newcastle AND Lingfield - fabulous contests with tremendous prize money up for grabs. We're taking in a nice race from Chelmsford, too. Spoilt? We're worth it, with bells on.

Here's a little guide as to who we think might trouble the judge on Friday afternoon, but you may well have your own notions, and your very own sand specialist favourites. We love the all-weather, and with the likes of Luke Morris, Billy Loughnane and Rossa Ryan setting the whole thing alight in recent seasons there's a great deal to be massively enthused about. If you're playing, have fun and good luck!

Today's Horse Races

Rationale;

13:50 Newcastle - So Darn Hot @ 10/3

Talented three-year-old handicappers go 6f, and trainer Andrew Balding fields three of them.

I'm dodging in-form Balding (24% strike-rate in the last 14 days) in favour of a son of unbeaten champion two-year-old Too Darn Hot. So Darn Hot is with Kevin Philippart De Foy at Newmarket, and capable claimer Warren Fentiman (5lb) is in the plate today.

The selection has had seven runs to date, winning on three occasions. He lines up off the back of a career-best at Lingfield 49 days ago when winning in this grade cosily despite idling a little close home.

Warren's claim all but wipes out the 6lb hike for that success and he absolutely looks the part to me.

13:50 Newcastle - Winner So Darn Hot

14:05 Lingfield - Kind Of Kiss each-way @ 6/1

A 10f Class 3 handicap, for older horses (4+).

Relatively-seasoned campaigners then; and a standard, maximum field of 14 to grapple with. My selection is the four-year-old Sea The Stars gelding Kind Of Kiss, trained by Kevin Philippart De Foy at HQ.

This one was with the great Andre Fabre until Boxing Day last (one win from three), and has had three spins for new connections. Nothing sensational to report, but last time at a level slightly higher than this he was a staying-on third at this venue, massively outrunning his odds of 80/1.

Arc-winning jockey Luke Morris has been engaged, he's off the same mark of 88 this afternoon, and as we're paying four places e/w (a wonderfully common theme today) that seems the eminently sensible way to go. Being drawn in the 10 box isn't perfection but there's plenty of time to get organised.

There could well be more to come after that little breakthrough display last time, and he evidently acts around here. Place money isn't to be sneezed at but that's not the limit of our ambitions.

14:05 Lingfield - Each-way 1/5 odds, 4 places Kind Of Kiss

Odds correct at time of publishing.

14:25 Newcastle - Cloud Cover @ 6/5

Older fillies and mares (4+) go 7f in this warm Class 2 handicap.

Cloud Cover is a five-year-old daughter of 2000 Guineas and Lockinge hero Night Of Thunder. She's trained by James Tate at Newmarket, and will be ridden by Cliff Lee, one of several top jocks to have had the pleasure.

The selection is a course-and-distance scorer, always useful, and is an impressive seven wins from 17 starts all told. Her last success was here in this grade 91 days ago, off a mark of 100. Prior to that she took a Listed contest at Deauville. There's substance and solidity behind her form, and the figures say she remains at the height of her powers.

She had a wind procedure last month which if merely bringing marginal benefits or remedying a slight issue can only be a good thing - and with her mark raised just three pounds I'm very hopeful that she can go in again for long-standing patron of the game Saeed Manana.

14:25 Newcastle - Winner Cloud Cover

14:40 Lingfield - Dragon Icon each-way @ 6/1

Yet another lovely four each-way places contest with Betfred - you know how the rest of this sentence goes.

The selection in this Class 3 mile handicap is a five-year-old Lope De Vega gelding, trained by Roger Varian at HQ and ridden by the great Silvestre De Sousa. Dragon Icon is habitually held up for a run but last time 49 days ago, here, he made the running over 10f and perhaps unsurprisingly faded at the business end.

Back to a mile now and with Silvestre up (he's ridden him once previously), and having been dropped a pound for last time by the kindly handicapper, I sense a plan coming together.

14:40 Lingfield - Each-way 1/5 odds, 4 places Dragon Icon

Odds correct at time of publishing.

15:00 Newcastle - Kingdom Come each-way @ 10/1

Seasoned mile handicappers contest a Class 2 worth over £79k to the winner; and as we're paying four places each-way that's my preferred option.

It wouldn't be a top-notch all-weather card without close examination of Rossa Ryan's rides. The guy's fabulous of course on any surface/venue/stage (see file marked Arc De Triomphe, in particular), but he teams up with another gent to be reckoned with in trainer Clive Cox - the pair being no strangers to plundering prizes like this one.

Kingdom Come is a six-year-old Kingman gelding, four wins from 18 starts, and when last seen 41 days ago at this level at Wolves finished a running-on third, beaten just a length.

He dwelt on that occasion, and with topweight of 9st 12lb couldn't quite land that winning blow. Same mark today, 103, but the make-up of this field determines that he carries the slightly more user-friendly steadier of 9st 7lb. However - and it's a significant one given what happened last time - he's drawn 12 of 14.

We're going to have to trust in a bit of Rossa magic to get him a possie from there and be able to strike late in the straight. It should be an absolute thriller and might just about be the trickiest heat on what's a simply sensational card.

15:00 Newcastle - Each-way 1/5 odds, 4 places Kingdom Come

Odds correct at time of publishing.

15:15 Lingfield - Prince Of Pillo @ 15/2

One of three carrying the famous Middleham Park racing silks, as four-year-olds-plus sprint 6f in a Class 3 handicap.

Three individual syndicates are represented as I understand it, and our selection Prince Of Pillo is listed as being owned by 'Middleham Park Racing V.' The five-year-old gelding hails from Richard Fahey's Musley Bank yard in North Yorkshire, and has winning form over course-and-distance.

The last twice he's been in Class 2 company, and most recently he was beaten just under 2l at Newcastle 29 days ago over what might these days be thought of as an inadequate 5f.

He was running on well at the finish then and gets the step back up to 6f this afternoon, which should suit. He's been rated as high as 105 in the past (90 today), and the likes of Ryan Moore and James Doyle have been booked previously, confirming the stable's opinion as to his capability.

Four wins so far from 14 starts is a very fair return, and Jack Garrity (he's been on board once previously) will be trying to make that five. No forlorn hope whatsoever.

15:15 Lingfield - Winner Prince Of Pillo

Odds correct at time of publishing.

15:35 Newcastle - Marshman @ 5/1

Hard to ignore this classy, versatile Listed and G3 scorer, housed with the mighty Karl Burke in Coverham, North Yorkshire.

Marshman is a five-year-old by prolific G1 sprint star Harry Angel. He had a lovely clear-the-cobwebs run at Donny nearly three weeks ago when finishing third to stablemate Spycatcher, meeting traffic problems late in the piece.

His mark of 110 remains unchanged, and he's a course-and-distance winner here in January. It was Listed company on Town Moor last time and this Class 2  handicap should be well within compass. Six furlongs of blink-and-you'll-miss-it, with any number of high-speed dangers.

Can't wait.

15:35 Newcastle - Winner Marshman

Odds correct at time of publishing.

15:50 Lingfield - Party Bear @ 9/4

Sometimes it's provident to follow the path of least resistance - a Karl Burke filly on an upward trajectory and in the form of her life.

Party Bear is on a hat-trick, after wins in March and early April at Wolves and Southwell respectively (both at today's trip of 7f). The three-year-old Kodi Bear offspring steps up a notch today to Class 4, and is 10lb higher than when starting this little winning spree at Dunstall Park in the West Midlands.

The Wolverhampton race wasn't confined to members of the fairer sex, as was the case at Southwell and indeed today, so that performance was all the more meritorious.

Last time was a meaty career-high, and the Racing Post race-reader uses the term 'comfortably' in his/her assessment, most encouragingly. Sam James was on top then and has the riding assignment once again.

Drawn 10 isn't ideal but there's time to resolve that, and she has shown plenty of early dash when required in the past.

16:07 Newcastle - Old Harrovian @ 4/1

It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the stellar form of not only Andrew Balding, who we've lauded already, but also one of his main men Oisin Murphy, too.

The reigning champion jockey has the leg-up on Balding's Old Harrovian, a six-year-old Sea The Stars gelding in quite literally the form of his life. This is a 10f Class 2 handicap, and over the same trip/track/grade this one sluiced up 91 days ago by over 3l.

The handicapper has had his/her say, unsurprisingly, and a vicious 9lb hike must be overcome. The fourth has won twice since and the sixth went under next time by just a whisker at Kempton in a £13k-to-the-winner affair. It all has a very solid look to it.

I'd fancifully like to imagine that after dotting up he was put away especially for the pursuit of this handsome £90k prize, and with the yard and its most potent jockey in such rude order he rates my Nap on the card.

Not many miles on the six-year-old's clock (two breaks of in excess of 300 days - with a handy three career wins from just 10 runs); and I think there's every reason to believe his ceiling has yet to be reached.

16:07 Newcastle - Winner Old Harrovian

Odds correct at time of publishing.

16:30 Chelmsford - Sky Majesty @ 5/6

Our solitary but welcome trip to Essex and a good-looking Conditions Stakes race worth nearly £40k to the winner, for three-year-olds.

Sky Majesty represents William Haggas, successful at Newmarket's Craven meeting this week, in tandem with Tom Marquand who rides plenty of Somerville Lodge inmates.

The selection is a filly by G1 superstar Blue Point, and is a perfect three-from-three harking back to her two-year-old campaign, including a couple of Group-level successes. She's precocious and talented then - and reappears as a three-year-old in this relatively routine affair as by far, unsurprisingly, the best-rated combatant.

Virtually all are having their first run as a three-year-old - our filly hasn't run for 188 days - but I feel I need to keep faith with her because if she's trained on successfully the level of form shown entitles her to put these away with a degree of authority, frankly.

Ryan Moore rides a potentially promising Juddmonte-owned gelding saddled by Andrew Balding, but our filly could just be a cut above, fingers crossed.

16:30 Chelmsford - Winner Sky Majesty

Odds correct at time of publishing.

16:42 Newcastle - Plage De Havre @ 11/2

Here we go again - fingers crossed that Andrew and Oisin have a bit more magic up their collective sleeves as top-end staying handicappers go just in excess of 2m.

Plage De Havre is a four-year-old gelded son of a French Derby winner, with one victory from six career starts. Last time out 34 days ago at Wolves he finished just under 3l behind one of today's rivals, Wonder Legend.

Ridden patiently that day by Dave Probert he attacked late and kept on, without threatening to trouble the winner. The selection is now 4lb better off and should be cherry-ripe after that spin - and he's won here before.

More famous colours belonging to a long-established owner, stretching back many years - Saeed Suhail.

Hope you've had a brilliant afternoon's sport - and from all of us here at Betfred, a very Happy Easter!
