Big race preview with owen mcmahon

Alongside the Betfred St Leger at Doncaster, there's another mouth-watering race on Saturday - the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown (15:25).

A field of eight has been declared for the Group 1 over 1m2f, and my Irish Champion Stakes Tips 2024 focuses on one of three British raiders.

  • Ghostwriter @ 8/1

How unfortunate has Clive Cox's GHOSTWRITER been this season?

The three-year-old son of Invincible Spirit has contested the 2,000 Guineas, French Derby, Eclipse and the Juddmonte International, finishing 4433 respectively, bumping into Notable Speech, current Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe favourite Look De Vega and City Of Troy, who's starting to live up to Aidan O'Brien's lofty reputation as the best horse he's ever trained, twice.

Add in Irish 2,000 Guineas and St James's Palace hero Rosallion, Grand Prix de Paris victor Sosie and emphatic Royal Ascot winner Calandagan and you're compiling a list of some of the best horses around right now.

He's pitched in similar company on Saturday, but the suggestion is this might just end up proving a slightly easier assignment than his previous two.

Economics is an exciting talent, but this is without doubt William Haggas' rising star's toughest task to date and he's plenty short enough at around 5/4 in my humble opinion.

Aidan O'Brien's Auguste Rodin is exceptional on his day but ultimately one of the most inconsistent horses in training, while his stablemate Los Angeles must make do without the peerless Ryan Moore and may find the trip too sharp at this level.

Luxembourg - the third of four for Ballydoyle - needs a revival after a sub-par effort in the King George at Ascot earlier this summer and the two at the foot of the market, Royal Rhyme and Hans Andersen, are 40/1 and 200/1 respectively.

Japanese raider Shin Emperor adds intrigue, but he hasn't won a single race in his home country this calendar year and that makes him very hard to advise in this company.

There's good reason to fancy Ghostwriter, who's in the form of his life and remains open to improvement having run just seven times in his career so far, could have his day in the sun.

At 8/1, my suggestion is a straight win bet.
