Idas boy

Here we have a horse who was purchased to chase the Grand National dream. Idas Boy won’t be among the favoured runners on Saturday but a syndicate is dreaming big in the hopes of pulling off quite the coup.

It is time to review the recent form and the story behind this 11-year-old along with the Grand National Odds of Idas Boy...

Richard Phillips Racing purchased Idas Boy with a specific aim of the 2025 Grand National at Aintree and he offered punters the chance to be involved in a syndicate to cover training fees and the like.

Called the Dozen Dreamers Syndicate, they have come together and will get the chance to watch their horse compete in the world’s most famous steeplechase.

For those looking for a hint at recent form, well I’m afraid to tell you that his trainer and connections have kept this horse well and truly out of the public eye. Only once has he taken to the track this season, as a decision was taken to keep him fresh and focused on the Grand National.

I wouldn’t put much stock in a relatively poor showing in that solitary race. Clearly he was sent there to knock off the rust ahead of Aintree at the weekend. Idas Boy was nowhere and ran like the 50/1 outsider the bookies had him at when they got underway in that Class II race at Doncaster early last month.

If you want a reason to believe that this long shot could pull off the upset though, you don’t have to go too far back in his history. Just last summer he won impressively in a Class I over in Kilbeggan, winning comfortably at 40/1 and showing that he had plenty of stamina in beating the well-fancied Rachael Blackmore-ridden Amirite on the day.

So we’ve seen him go well in the not-too-distant past but Saturday does feel like a step too far and maybe two or three years late for this 11-year-old. 2021 to 2023 was clearly the highlight of his career and any big run at this stage would be a surprise - hence the big price being offered by the traders here at Betfred.
