I am maximus

A good place to start with our Grand National profiles is of course the 2024 winner - and that is the Willie Mullins trained I Am Maximus.

This nine-year-old was a hot pick 12 months ago as he zoomed up the AntePost market before going off as the joint-favourite, beating Delta Work by seven-and-a-half lengths to win. Can he repeat? He’ll certainly be among the favourites as we delve into the Grand National Odds of I Am Maximus in our horse profile for Saturday’s big race…

Any horse who has already won over the Aintree fences will get plenty of looks to see whether they can repeat. History, however, tells us that it is a very tough feat. The legendary Tiger Roll won in back-to-back years in 2018 and 2019 but that was the first time since Red Rum back in the 70s where a horse had won the race on multiple occasions.

It would be fair to say that the 2025 jumps season has been far from ideal for I Am Maximus. From the get go, the plan for this talented nine-year-old was clearly to build up and target a repeat of the Grand National.

A disappointing season-debut over at Leopardstown in December saw him being pulled-up in the Savills Chase. He would continuously jump to the left and was well down the field when his jockey said enough was enough.

The Irish Gold Cup was next and an eighth-place finish was certainly better. But once more, watching him jump was something you’d do from behind the sofa as that lurch to the left was still happening.

An appearance in the Bobbyjo was scrapped due to a bruised foot, so we are left with more questions than answers about his form coming into Aintree this time around. What we know for sure if that he’s a very classy horse. You don’t win the Grand National so impressively without having serious pedigree, but his form is a massive question mark heading into Saturday.

He also tops the weights and will go at 11st 12lbs for the Grand National, which is 6lbs more than he carried last year to victory. The last horse to carry more and win was Golden Miller back in 1934.

There are plenty of reasons to back him, but if you want to look elsewhere there are lots of opportunities to find a runner in better form and/or with a more favourable weight.
