Racing on Wednesday in the UK and Ireland comes from Bangor, Catterick, Kempton (AW), Navan and Nottingham.
One of our fancies is a two-year-old from Karl Burke’s yard who is looking for more C&D success at Catterick. He featured in a Listed contest last time out but is now operating in handicap company off a mark that appears very workable.
Wednesday Racing Tips
14:42 Nottingham – Salamanca @ 2/1
As a 335,000 Guineas yearling purchase, Salamanca was an expensive buy, so a lot will be expected from the son of Sea The Stars ahead of his debut in this maiden contest at Nottingham this afternoon.
Jane Chapple-Hyam has chosen a good starting point for her horse, as those in this race that have appeared so far failed to make an impression on their debuts. The well-bred colt should appreciate this 1m trip, as his dam also won over 1m as a two-year-old.
The two-year-old features on the Betfred Betfinder as one of the Most Napped selections today.
With an entry in the Group One Vertem Futurity Stakes later this year, he is clearly well-regarded at home and he can take a big step towards that Doncaster assignment with victory on his opening start.
15:50 Catterick – Ice Max @ 6/4
Ice Max built on a respectable debut at Haydock to get off the mark at the second attempt when scoring over this C&D. He hit the front inside the closing furlong and he soon stretched away from his rials for a three-length success.
Karl Burke’s runner then stepped up to Listed level at Doncaster for the Flying Scotsman Stakes, again over 7f. He was in touch with the leaders up until two furlongs from home but then got outpaced in the closing stages of that race.
The son of Dark Angel now makes his handicap debut off a mark of 80 on his return to this course. With more improvement likely, and this being a small field, it looks like a great opportunity for him to get back to winning ways.
16:25 Navan – Fratas @ 6/1
Fratas made it three wins from her last three starts when she prevailed at Tramore over 1m4f last month. She had no problems stepping up in trip to continue her excellent run on the track.
The three-year-old filly has shown how tough she is in her winning run, outbattling her rivals in the closing stages of those races for narrow margin successes. That has meant she hasn’t rocketed up the ratings.
Michael Mulvany’s runner will need to defy a 5lb higher mark this time, but with 7lb claimer Wesley Joyce on her back, rather than regular 5lb apprentice Jamie Powell, she is only 3lb worse off than her success at Tramore. The daughter of Fracos looks like the one to beat again.
