13:50 York - Vintage Clarets @ 9/1

Before the Group action gets underway, there’s a mightily competitive sprint handicap to get stuck into and Vintage Clarets looks like a fascinating runner after his Shergar Cup success under Hugh Bowman 11 days ago.

He proved he’s just as effective on a quick surface when winning that day, having recorded many of his previous wins on a slower surface, and while he loses Bowman, he gets a talented apprentice, Ethan Tindall, taking over.

He’s still able to claim 7lb and he was seen to good effect when winning the Great St Wilfrid consolation race on Saturday. The young rider helps offset the 4lb rise in the weights.

Another factor in his favour could be his high draw in stall 17. It’s generally beneficial to be drawn low over this sort of distance on the Knavesmire, but there’s so much pace in the high numbers, it’s easy to see that stat getting turned on its head in this particular contest.

With the yard in form and a previous course success in the book, this son of Ardad looks capable of running a big race and looks worth supporting each-way with Betfred paying five places on the race.

15:35 York - Delacroix @ 15/8

There may only be six runners, but this year’s renewal is high on quality with the Eclipse winner, Prince Of Wales’s Stakes winner, Sheema Classic winner and an unbeaten Aga Khan colt facing off.

Preference is given to the Irish raider, Delacroix, who had Ombudsman in behind in the Eclipse, despite nothing going right for him on that occasion.

That was a major performance on the back of his Derby disappointment and he’s given the impression that he’s going to be a real specialist over this sort of distance.

There could easily be more to come from this impeccably bred son of Dubawi out of Tepin, and there’s an argument to say he should be the outright favourite for Wednesday’s feature.

16:55 Carlisle - Operation Gimcrack @ 2/1

The maiden handicap on the Carlisle card may not take a lot of winning, and it looks like a good opportunity for Operation Gimcrack, who has been knocking on the door this season.

He arrives on the back of a career best effort at Doncaster when only beaten a nose and he shaped like this stiffer trip would see him to even better effect.

With just a 1lb rise to cope with, he looks like the one to beat.
